Out With Slices, In With Classrooms: Zoners Approve Yale’s Post-Pizza Wall St. Redo

Current facade of 82-90 Wall St.

Planned new facade.

It’s official: No more slices will be ready from the oven at the old Naples Pizza on Wall Street.

The owner of the building at 82 – 90 Wall, Yale University, received Board of Zoning Appeals approval to return the former eatery space back to all-student use.

Commissioners voted unanimously to approve requested variances pertaining to the Yale-owned interconnected buildings on Wall Street bookended by Stoeckel Hall on the west and Blue State Coffee on the east. (Click here to read a previous story detailing the proposed changes.)

The university’s counsel for the project, Joseph Hammer, termed the project a renovation that will make possible a range of already permitted university uses.

Plans call for the university to remove the one-story elevated front addition that had housed the pizzeria and to transform the interior space on the first floor into small seminar rooms, classrooms, meeting spaces, small offices, and a student lounge.

For passersby on Wall Street, most noticeable will be the proposed transformation of the street-facing entrance. Gone will be the steps; in their place will be a covered feature that architect Michael Scott, of Hartford based TSKP Studios, termed a ground-level open-air breezeway.”

In the back will come new ramps, terracing, and fencing and a more accessible entrance. A larger courtyard will be wrapped within a brick and metal fence adjacent to the neighbor on the south, the Yale-affiliated Elizabethan Club.

Hammer said the overall parking plan for the university would be unaffected by the project.

The planned renovation, added Scott, occupies the same volume as the current one story addition but it’s open to the air and addresses the street in an appropriate manner.”

Based on the staff report and presentation,” said BZA Chairwoman Mildred Melendez, I vote to approve.” The unanimous vote followed.
