No one has the political will to call a halt to the scam that is the tax exemption for wealthy non-profits, but at least some beneficiaries are sufficiently shamed into making bigger "donation" for what they have ripped off from their communities.

Another of New Haven’s legendary town and gown meeting places gone.
Taxable property, gone.
The streets being sold from the city to be under Yale’s control, gone forever.
Fortress Yale owns the majority of downtown area property where commercial/retail space exists.
They are buying up more property whenever they can if it might suit their future expansion needs.
They are filling up those commercial properties we have left with big chain stores and high end retail and food and beverage businesses.
Pretty soon Fortress Yale will make sure nobody goes downtown for anything unless they are upper middle class or rich.
Pretty soon their property use and control will be creating a feeling of drawbridges and moats and will make it difficult for regular working class folks to feel comfortable shopping, eating or doing anything downtown, except work for plantation/fortress Yale.

How much do we get in PILOT funds, in addition to the benefits of having a world-class institution in our city?

Yale has its own police force and trash removal. Their students have very few children enrolled in our schools. And Yale makes a payment for fire department services. Altogether, Yale is more than covering the costs of city government that they require and use.

Is there an opportunity cost to having Yale own a chunk of our downtown? If Yale wasn’t here, would their footprint generate more tax dollars than we receive in PILOT funds? The reality is it would not!

Plus, what about the fact that Yale makes the rest of downtown livable, desirable and more valuable? How much less tax revenues would the Yale areas generate without the presence of Yale?

Bland, bland, bland.

Yale needs to contribute more. New Haven shouldn’t be giving a single cent to the university in the form of a tax break. But Patricia is also wrong. Yale gives more to New Haven than U of Penn gives to Philadelphia. That isn’t due to the benevolence of Yale but rather the will and organization of our community.

Yeah, Yale is going to quietly close and consume all businesses on the street before proposing that it is no longer a city street and should be included in their campus. They're slowly taking over and giving nothing in return. Our fractured and short sighted leadership can't defend us against their long term plans. Our city is being gutted from within and given to wealthy people who don't live here. It's disgusting.

@AverageTaxpayer: "AT" has it just about right. The old cliche about New Haven being another Bpt. without Yale is spot on. For those who continually criticize Yale for not doing more, just think, analyze, and then compare how much better off NH is because of all that Yale brings to our town. Seriously.

New Haven was a great city before Yale and would be a great city without Yale. The assumption that we should all be grateful to the education corporation that doesn't pay taxes and undermines our police force by hiring NHPD officers is absurd. If Yale left we would lose a couple of hotels and museums but the natural order would be restored. Currently, we have a concentration of wealth and privilege in a sea of inequality and poverty. There are the few of us middle class folks trying to raise families in the middle of that nonsense. If Yale is your hero then you must work there, because the rest of us don't see those benefits.
