Patagonia, SERIOUSLY?! We already have a Denali and a Trailblazer, and we're getting an LL Bean, so Yale thought the smart money would be ON ANOTHER HIGH END OUTDOOR RETAILER?

Unbelievable.

This really makes no sense unless Yale is plotting a going out of business sale for somebody...

Patagonia is one of the high end brands Trailblazer carries, distinguishing Trailblazer from Bean's. So is Trailblazer retreating to the suburbs? I wonder what their agreement with Patagonia is. I would have thought it would want market exclusivity in greater New Haven for North Face, Patagonia, etc.

With all of these outdoor outfitters, is New Haven seeking National Park Status, or something...?

Bill: Perhaps, in his old age, Bruce Alexander thinks he is in Ithaca or Hanover, not New Haven. :).

(For the record, Bruce was sharp as ever when I saw him not too long ago.)

There is nothing hipster about Patagonia. It actually directly espouses the mainstream of America's materialistic values. One might even consider them, and those who utilize their products, as absolutely generic.

@Timothy, Patagonia is actually seen as a status symbol and a bit of a "vanity cause" since it stands for sustainability. Their clothing is VERY expensive. Their other outlet is in Westport, where you'll find wealthy denizens sporting their logo.

Their business practices, however, are pretty admirable.

To those wondering about a going out of business situation, if you read the article closely, Denali (which is owned by the same owner as Trailblazer) is operating this store.

Trailblazer specializes in North Face, while Denali was Patagonia.

Disappointing. Another bland, boring retail store. LL Bean must be thrilled about building a new store in a spot oversaturated with "outdoorsy" shopping options. That corner could use a good restaurant, coffee shop or bar, despite Yale's aversion to such tenants. The area could use a little more energy in the evening, after the retailers have closed for the day.

Glass: Alexander requires all tenants to stay open until nine p.m. The Co-op refused such a condition, and therefore had to move, leading to a painful, withering death at Chapel Square Mall. A bar would do well, but given that most undergrads are underage, would cater more to Townies than students. As it is, students have "Woads" for really letting go, and post-union Mory's for more sedate gatherings.

I wish B Alexander would go camping....somewhere else.

And it would be nice if these shops distributed tents to the scads of homeless in the parks as umbrellas are inadequate to the climate. It would be great PR for the 3 stores (same owners).

Thank you for your response. As a rejoinder, I would offer the distinction that being hip is not dependent on cost but being in the mainstream is. Hipster is the wrong word to use with which to begin when referring to those who frequent these shops.

I am pretty unhip, but are "hipsters" and urban and music oriented, rather than outdoorsy? I had thought they were the successor gentrifiers was to Young Urban Professionals (YUPpies). I would call this clothing bourgeois or preppie. I bet Patagonia is pretty popular on prep school campuses these days.

I did not say Patagonia was hipster.I said do they carry Hipster Underwear. And they do.So your point.
