Jorge and Jorge (who declined to provide their last names) deconstructing the plaza flower beds Friday.

At sunrise, a pair of construction workers grabbed both ends of a flat stone atop a Pitkin Plaza planter, ready to heave it off.

The men (who both happened to be named Jorge) spent Friday morning dismantling two built-in flower planters in the brick plaza on Orange and Chapel.

They were working on behalf of the Town Green Special Services District, the organization that helps steward many public spaces downtown, which is trying to make Pitkin Plaza a more flexible site for community activities.

The Town Green District received permission from the Parks Commission in March 2023 to fund and execute the removal of four planters. The organization had already gotten rid of one planter prior to deconstructing an additional two on Friday.

Those planters are not moveable at all,” said Town Green District Director Win Davis, who said that they offered limited spatial configurations for gatherings such as the organization’s summertime Movies in the Plaza screenings. The group plans to replace the built-in planters with pots and flower beds that can be moved around.
