Call It The Cop Oscars

On the same day that city officials announced that the crime rate has steadily plunged for five years, many of the cops responsible for the drop got their due.

They got their due at the first New Haven Police Department awards ceremony in five years, held at Anthony’s Ocean View Wednesday night to give the city’s rank and file police officers long overdue recognition.

Assistant Chief Luiz Casanova said prior to 2011 the awards ceremony was an annual event, but for some reason the event just stopped. When Cassanova was put in charge of the department’s Professional Standards and Training Bureau, he said, he knew that he wanted to revive the tradition.

Casanova tapped soon-to-be retired Capt. Julie Johnson to spearhead the event because of her tenacity and persistence. She gets the job done. Not matter where you put her,” he said.

Johnson, with the help of Lt. Racheal Cain, Lt. Robert Criscuolo, Sgt. Tammi Means and Sgt. Brett Runlett, put together what can only be called The Oscars of New Haven police awards.

I was like, Let’s do this,’” she said.

Officer David Diaz and Detective Carlos Conceicao.

Mayor Toni Harp said Wednesday in her remarks that she was having a great day thanks to the efforts of the police officers in the room who had worked so hard to deliver a decrease in crime each year for the last five years.

The entire city appreciates your efforts,” she said. Thank you from the bottom of my heart for being role models and performing your duties above and beyond expectations.”

Sgt. Karl Jacobson.

Henry Lee, forensic scientist and namesake of The Henry Lee Institute for Forensic Science at the University of New Haven, told the officers and their families that though it is a tough time to be a police officer, the difference between those who win and lose in this climate is how they approach their jobs.

I’ve been in law enforcement 68 years,” he said. And people are always asking me, What’s the difference between a winner and a loser?’ The winner always is part of the answer; the loser always is part of the problem.” He said that those who were receiving awards Wednesday night — many for making cases that brought down dangerous gangs in the city, seizing drugs and guns and piecing together evidence to catch criminals — are winners.

Capt. Julie Johnson is the 2014 recipient of the Detective Andrew Faggio Service Award.

He said they could view their awards and medals as ” just another medal or another piece of paper.” But he urged them to be proud of what they had accomplished.

You earned them,” he said. Be proud of them.”

Sgt. Renee Dominguez with Jennifer Faggio, widow of detective Andrew Faggio. Dominguez is the 2015 recipient of the award named for Faggio.

At the ceremony Wednesday, it was announced that Detective Andrew Faggio, who died in 2012 as a result of injuries sustained in a 2003 automobile accident, will have his name added to the Law Enforcement Memorial in Washington, D.C. this week thanks to a successful campaign by the city to get it added. Faggio’s name also will be added to the Connecticut Law Enforcement Memorial on May 19.
