Have you seen these people? If so, cops want to know.

City and Yale police have turned to the public for help, asking if anyone can identify a group of people who may have witnessed or even participated in an alleged hate crime downtown earlier this month.

City Police Chief Karl Jacobson, city Assistant Police Chief Bertram Ettienne, Yale Police Chief Anthony Campbell and Mayor Justin Elicker put out that request during a Friday midday press conference held on the third floor of police headquarters at 1 Union Ave.

The police brass released a handful of photographs of a group of people cops want to talk to about an incident that took place on Sept. 3 at around 12:16 a.m. near 222 York St.

That’s when, based on city and Yale surveillance video footage reviewed by local police, a group of white men appear to have beaten up a 25-year-old Hispanic man while shouting racial slurs at him.

These pictures show individuals we need to talk to,” Jacobson said. He declined to say whether or not these people are suspects or witnesses. We just need to talk to these individuals” to try to get the whole story on this serious assault.”

Ettienne said that, based on available video, the victim and his friends were walking on York Street towards Broadway when a confrontation with another group of males and females who appear to be Caucasian” took place.

After a verbal altercation,” Ettienne said, the victim went back to the group — and appears to have been assaulted by at least two or three individuals who allegedly shouted racial slurs at him.

The victim sustained jaw injuries and a laceration to the back of his head,” he said. Ettienne said the victim now appears to be doing fine,” and has been cooperative with the police.

The group in the newly released photographs was last seen in the parking lot island on Broadway, entering two white pickup trucks and a grey or silver Hyundai.

We know that someone out there will recognize these individuals,” Campbell said. We would like to speak with them. We want to hear their side, what they saw, their involvement, and any additional information they may have.”

We will be working very hard to identify the individuals and hold them accountable,” Elicker added. We need the public’s help.”

Police encourage anyone with information about the individuals pictured above to contact Det. Cordero at 475 331‑3111.
