Post-Texas Pro-Choice Call: Look To Congress

Ted Littleford

In the wake of a U.S. Supreme Court decision allowing Texas to effectively ban abortion with the help of bounty-hunting vigilantes, pro-choice advocates need to turn their attention to Congress.

Two leading pro-choice advocates issued that call during an appearance on WNHH FM’s Love Babz Love Talk” program.

The advocates — Planned Parenthood of Southern New England organizer Gretchen Raffa and NARAL Pro-Choice Connecticut Director Liz Gustafson — spoke about last Wednesday night’s U.S. Supreme Court decision declining to block a new Texas law banning abortions at six weeks after conception and offering $10,000 rewards to citizens who sue abortion providers or helpers (including Uber drivers).

Gustafson called the decision an unprecedented” wake-up call” to advocates of legal abortion. The decision clears a path for states to override people’s constitutional rights” by provid[ing] a road map for other states” to enact similar laws.

On the other hand, the decision didn’t come out of the blue: Gustafson noted that 600 bills aimed at restricting abortion rights have been introduced in state legislatures nationwide over the past year, 90 of which have been enacted so far. The endgame: Overturning the Supreme Court ruling in Roe v. Wade granting women a constitutional right to an abortion.

The courts are not going to protect us. We know that,” Raffa stated. Congress has to act.”

She urged people to push Congress to pass The Women’s Health Protection Act, a bill co-sponsored by Connecticut U.S. Sens. Richard Blumenthal and Chris Murphy. It would codify the legal right to abortion.
