Teen Arrested For Carjacking, Attacking 74-Year-Old At Hamden Plaza

Hamden police have arrested a 16-year-old accused of pushing an elderly shopper to the ground and making off with her car.

The attack took place at Hamden Plaza on March 18 at 3 p.m. The victim was a 74-year-old library employee. The attack startled the town and prompted a meeting among the plaza’s owner, town officials and seniors about crime in general. (Click here to read about that meeting.)

The victim was placing her purchases into the car, when she was violently thrown to the ground from behind. The victim was transported to the hospital with a serious hip injury,” police spokesperson Sean J. Dolan reported in a release issued Monday afternoon.

He reported that the department’s Major Crimes Unit conducted an extensive investigation” that revealed that three suspects fled in the victim’s vehicle from the shopping center.” The three had arrived at the plaza in a different stolen vehicle, which they left behind and which the cops recovered, Dolan stated.

The woman’s vehicle was later recovered in New Haven.

Based on their investigation, Hamden police obtained an arrest warrant for the 16-year-old suspect, who lives in New Haven. He faces charges of first-degree robbery and second-degree larceny.
