Let's not be naive. There is virtually no voter fraud. This is a solution in search of a problem.
The Republican party is a minority party that knows it can't win an election unless it suppresses voter turnout.
That is what this is all about. Suppress turnout among the traditional Democratic party constituency. Those who have a harder time getting to the polls and who are less likely to have voter ID are less likely to vote under these new Draconian laws.
And why is it Ok to make voting harder, not easier? We are supposed to be the beacon of democracy, yet we have one party utterly dedicated to discouraging, not encouraging voting?
If the proposals pass, it will become harder — and even, sometimes, legally riskier — to cast a ballot in Texas, a state that already has some of the most restrictive election laws in the country.
One of the most troubling is the provision for poll watchers. This is intimidation, period. Can you imagine Proud Boys as poll watchers while an elderly black man is trying to vote? Come one.
The House version even prevents poll watchers from being removed for violating election law unless they've already been warned. The Texas branch of the American Civil Liberties Union calls this a "one-time get out of jail free card for voter intimidation."
(As recently as 1962, Republican poll watchers in some parts of Texas challenged Black and Latino voters to read and explain the U.S. Constitution before casting ballots as part of a campaign dubbed "Operation Eagle Eye.")
This is nothing but a modern version of the same thing.
They ban the use of drop boxes for mail ballots, the mailing of absentee ballot applications to all eligible voters, drive-thru voting and 24-hour voting locations.
Finally, all of these Republican states are removing the neutral professional election officials and replacing them with party hacks.
Come on, man.
Most of these states introducing these new laws have a history of voter intimidation and voter suppression.
Until the 2013 Supreme Court decision in Shelby County v Holder, those states would have required preclearance--federal approval. In their decision, the Court hilariously suggested that voter intimidation was a thing of the past, and all those states has miraculously undergone a radical change of heart.
Yeah. And I have a bridge to sell you.
From a Wikipedia article on Shelby:
Five years after the ruling, nearly 1,000 U.S. polling places had closed, many of them in predominantly African-American counties. Research shows that changing and reducing voting locations can reduce voter turnout.
There were also cuts to early voting, purges of voter rolls and imposition of strict voter ID laws.
A 2020 study found that jurisdictions that had previously been covered by preclearance substantially increased their voter registration purges after the Shelby decision. Virtually all restrictions on voting subsequent to the ruling were enacted by Republicans.
Com on man, I wasn't born yesterday . Virtually no voter fraud means that there was some voter fraud and appearance of voter fraud. Why object to working towards absolutely no voter fraud. Minority party who can not win an election without suppressing voter turnout. Your statement Certainly does not align with the 27 republican governors compared to the 23 democratic governors. Shouldn't voting be made easier. Of course, but I certainly believe it is rather easy now. I believe the change for poll workers is to just get them a better view of the process. You must remember last election when democratic poll moderators wouldn't allow republican poll watchers in the same room when counting votes. Don't you?? Or have you conveniently forgotten that. Recently as 1962? That was a half of century ago. No need to say anymore. And finally, probably the most entertaining statement, replacing professional moderators with political hacks. Ever been to a New Haven voting location? BTW if you are over 65 you can still vote mail in, automatically.
So now we don't believe in the Supreme Court decisions, I guess this one doesn't meet your satisfaction. Oh well, let's pack the court with a whole bunch of liberal justices. And btw that old liberal judge, let's replace him with a younger, more liberal judge. Maybe one who will not follow the law, but listen to the loudest voices. Yea, that will work! Sorry one wicpedia article cannot adequately back up anything. Hasn't that platform gone through recent credibility issues? C'mon man!
Am I living in a different world than the cartoonist? Every article I read tells me that a great majority of the American public favors voter ID. I also understand the changes proposed in the Texas legislation expand voter opportunities in the voting process, except the legislation language that limits "drive by" voting. I also understand that mail in voting only requires a driving license number or the last four digits of your SS number or another easily obtained identifier. What's the problem? How bout some political satire showing all the democratic legislatures showing their ID to get on a plane to fly to Washington DC. to avoid their elected responsibilities.. oh wait, their party probably paid for their charter flight and for the beer. And I supposed to support their actions?
