Warrant: Window-Tossed Gun Led To Hill Arrest

When the cops kicked in his front door just before dawn Friday morning, a 30-year-old New Haven man allegedly threw a loaded semi-automatic handgun out of a third-story window.

The police found the weapon anyway — along with two other loaded guns hidden in his apartment.

Those details are included in a narrative written by New Haven Police Det. Francisco Sanchez.

The narrative is included in an arrest warrant for a 30-year-old New Haven man whom police have charged with four felonies and two misdemeanors — including for criminal possession of a firearm, possession of a large capacity magazine, altering or removing ID marks on a firearm, possession of a controlled substance, and possession of a controlled substance with intent to sell. He is currently being held on $100,000 bond.

Here’s what happened, according to Sanchez’s writeup.

A police investigation conducted last week identified this man as possessing a gun at the three-family home he lives at on Cedar Street. The rental property is owned by an affiliate of local megalandlord Mandy Management.

The man was convicted of a drug-related felony in 2012, and is therefore prohibited from owning firearms, Sanchez wrote.

So police applied for and received a search and seizure warrant from state Superior Court Judge Eugene Calistro, and then served that warrant at around 5:16 a.m. on Friday, July 2.

City police with the department’s Shooting Task Force (STF) knocked on the front door of the home and announced their presence by shouting, Police with a search warrant,” Sanchez wrote.

STF Det. Thomas Glynn waited a reasonable amount of time before forcing entry through the front door,” Sanchez wrote.

When they entered the residence, police found eight individuals, including one juvenile, in the basement, first floor, second floor, and third floor apartments.

While officers were entering the residence, a firearm was thrown out of a third floor window and landed in the side yard,” Sanchez wrote. Directly above where the firearm landed was the window of the apartment rented by the man police ultimately arrested.

During the search of the residence, police found and collected the following evidence:

• One black 22 Walther P22 semi-automatic handgun with an obliterated serial number, one round in the chamber, and a loaded magazine. This gun was located in the side yard of the Cedar Street building.

• One chrome Rossi revolver 38 special with five live rounds. Police found this gun in a chest next to the bed in the 30-year-old man’s third-floor bedroom.

• One green and black semi-automatic Taurus G2C 9mm handgun with one round in the chamber and a loaded magazine. Police found this weapon under the 30-year-old man’s bed.

• 17 brass bullets stamped 7.65 and five brass 32 caliber bullets, located inside of the small dresser in the man’s third-floor bedroom.

• 23 Winchester 12 gauge shot gun shells, located in the small dresser drawer in the man’s third-floor bedroom.

• One yellow Ziploc baggie containing five 22 caliber bullets and a CT ID card for the 30-year-old man, found inside the small dresser drawer in the man’s bedroom.

• Over a dozen baggies and wax folds containing upwards of eight grams of cocaine and over three grams of heroin.

Due to the poor condition of the basement apartment where two adults and a juvenile were found, Sanchez wrote, city police made a referral to the state Department of Children and Families (DCF).

And during a subsequent interview with city police, the 30-year-old man admitted to throwing the firearm out of his bedroom window as officers entered the residence, according to the report.

He has not yet entered a plea in the ongoing criminal case. His next court date in the matter is scheduled for July 21.
