Winthrop Fire Displaces 7

A second-alarm house fire on Winthrop Avenue Tuesday morning displaced seven New Haveners.

Fifty-four firefighters arrived at 223 Winthrop Ave. at 6:16 a.m. after receiving a report of heavy smoke leaking out of the third floor of the 1910-built multi-family home.

Crews initiated an aggressive attack and search of the building and immediately began protecting the neighboring building that was in danger,” Asst. Fire Chief Daniel Coughlin told the Independent.

The fire went to a second alarm and was brought under control.”

No one was injured in the fire. Everyone living in the building, four adults and three children, was displaced and relocated to a nearby hotel. The cause is under investigation.
