Young Republican Seeks Hamden Board Of Ed Seat

Andrew Tammaro.

A 2021 poli sci grad who grew up in Hamden’s Mount Carmel area and attended Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School is diving into town politics.

His name is Andrew Tammaro. He joined the Republican Town Committee, which has now endorsed his candidacy for a set on Board of Education in this year’s general election.

Following is the text of a release his campaign issued Wednesday:

Today, Andrew Tammaro officially announced his candidacy for the Hamden Board of Education as a Republican in the November 2021 municipal election.

Born and raised in Hamden, Tammaro has resided in Mount Carmel — the town’s 1st District — all his life. After having attended Wintergreen Interdistrict Magnet School in Hamden for nine years, he later graduated from Notre Dame High School of West Haven. He then went on to graduate from Stonehill College (Easton, MA) with a Bachelor’s degree in Political Science in the spring of 2020.

A new member of the Hamden Republican Town Committee, Tammaro made sure to extend his gratitude to the town’s party leadership for prompting him with the decision to run. He noted, I can’t thank Town Chairman Frank LaDore enough for bringing me onto the Committee and presenting me with this opportunity to represent Hamden in the Board of Education. His encouragement and the immediate outpouring support from the party have been integral in my consideration and ultimate decision to pursue a seat on the Board.”

My vision for Hamden’s schools is shaped by my experiences, and grounded in a strong personal philosophy,” Tammaro said. Though nothing is more important to me than to serve the Town of Hamden and its residents, especially its students and their families. They are the lifeblood of our education system.”

As a student, Andrew gained a wealth of experience in politics as President of the Stonehill College Republicans and Executive Director of the Massachusetts Alliance of College Republicans. But to him, what best prepared him for this role was the value of the liberal arts education he received, particularly in how it showcased the importance of the student-teacher relationship.

Tammaro explained, My experiences as a student are defined by strong relationships with teachers. These relationships and a feeling of personal investment from instructors are indispensable in cultivating enriched students, who turn into engaged members of their communities. For this to happen, it is absolutely imperative that our students, from kindergarten through high school, are able to learn in-person and full-time.”

I look forward to meeting and speaking with residents all throughout Hamden, and offering serious solutions to the serious issues facing our town. My imperative is to transform your concern into meaningful action through honest, transparent, and intelligent representation,” Andrew continued. I welcome and cherish the opportunity to bring a fresh outlook on education to Hamden, a town which finds itself shackled by bureaucracy, inaction, and opacity.”
