(Updated: 5:48 p.m.) Crews are repairing a 10-inch water main that burst on Chapel Street in Fair Haven Friday morning. The burst was first detected at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Chapel and Mill Streets, just over the Chapel Street Bridge, according to Joan Huwiler, spokeswoman for the Regional Water Authority. (Click here for Channel 8’s footage.)
Getting to the 1898 pipe was a challenge, she said — crews first had to hack through abandoned trolley tracks and the concrete road. As of 5:45 p.m., the road remained closed to traffic. Three buildings were without water. Huwiler said there wasn’t much flooding, just a lot of dirt.
The eruption was caused by a three-foot split on the century-old main, Huwiler said.
RWA expects the water to be back on by 7:30 p.m. Friday. Crews aim to backfill the road by 10 p.m., at which point Laydon, a paving contractor, will repave the road. Repaving will be done by midnight, she said.

it was cool seeing the old railroad tracks under the pavement; makes me wonder why rail was abandoned in this part of town.
but then I'm grateful they're covered up, because rail crossings are deadly for cyclists!
the bridge gates remained down for much of the day, but the bridge was in the "closed" position; boats couldn't freely pass without it opening. I suspect this was to facilitate truck movement to/from the scene from downtown.
