1898 Water Main Bursts

Picture%201.png(Updated: 5:48 p.m.) Crews are repairing a 10-inch water main that burst on Chapel Street in Fair Haven Friday morning. The burst was first detected at 7:30 a.m. Friday at Chapel and Mill Streets, just over the Chapel Street Bridge, according to Joan Huwiler, spokeswoman for the Regional Water Authority. Getting to the 1898 pipe was a challenge, she said — crews first had to hack through abandoned trolley tracks and the concrete road. As of 5:45 p.m., the road remained closed to traffic. Three buildings were without water. Huwiler said there wasn’t much flooding, just a lot of dirt.

The eruption was caused by a three-foot split on the century-old main, Huwiler said.

RWA expects the water to be back on by 7:30 p.m. Friday. Crews aim to backfill the road by 10 p.m., at which point Laydon, a paving contractor, will repave the road. Repaving will be done by midnight, she said.
