Baby Found In Dumpster

(Updated) Maintenance workers found an abandoned baby in a dumpster at the Presidential Gardens apartment complex.

Police are investigating the discovery. They got the call about it Monday around 2 p.m., said police spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff.

Duff said the baby, an 8‑month-old girl, is in stable condition at Yale New Haven Children’s Hospital. Officers have located her mother.

Police have arrested a 24-year-old Hamden woman (not the baby’s mother) who they said was responsible for placing the baby in the Dumpster.

The baby suffered burns to both hands. As of Monday night, police had not concluded who was responsible for the injuries.

Update: It turns out the arrested woman was the girl’s baby sitter, according to Duff. Duff added in a release issued Tuesday morning that the babysitter had assaulted the baby’s 21-year-old mother prior to dumping the baby in the dumpster.

Police have charged the babysitter with risk of injury to a child, second-degree assault, and first-degree reckless endangerment. She was being held on $250,000 bond prior to a scheduled Tuesday arraignment in Superior Court.

New Haven Police and the state Department of Children and Families (DCF) are continuing to investigate the cause of the child’s injuries. Investigators have not yet determined who is responsible for the infant’s burn injuries,” Duff wrote.

The Presidential Gardens complex is along Dixwell Avenue, Shelton Avenue and Hazel Street in Newhallville..
