One of Mayor Justin Elicker’s top appointees, Chief Administrative Officer Scott Jackson, is resigning his post as of Thursday.

Jackson, a former Hamden mayor, said in a release that he’s resigning for personal reasons.”

This has been one of the greatest opportunities in my professional life: serving the people of New Haven in this deeply challenging time,” he is quoted as saying in the release.

The chief administrative officer is one of the mayor’s coordinators,” overseeing departments like police, fire, public works, parks, and the emergency operations center.

Mayor Justin Elicker said Sunday he expects the city to post the job opening soon. (It wasn’t up on the city website as of 1 p.m.) We are open to all applicants, whether internal or external” to city government, Elicker said.

Under the city charter, the Board of Alders reviews the mayor’s pick for the job and has the chance to confirm or reject it.

Elicker was asked if he plans to appoint an acting CAO in the meantime. Rebecca Bombero currently serves as deputy CAO. The CAO reports to Chief of Staff Sean Matteson.

Nobody will be officially named acting,” Elicker responded in a text message.

The absence of someone in the CAO position will be covered by several people including Becky and Sean.

Given the wealth of experience of our staff and department heads, we feel well covered in the short term.”
