Arrests Follow Carjackings, Crash

Carjackers stole vehicles throughout New Haven and Hamden Thursday — and may have ended up arrested after an Ellsworth Avenue crash.

As many as a dozen carjackings were reported in the two communities throughout the day. At least some took place at gunpoint.

One took place outside the downtown FBI building.

Then at 5:30 a stolen car crashed into a home at Ellsworth and Chapel. Two young men fled the scene.

Police subsequently arrested two young men nearby who are believed to be involved in the carjacking. They also recovered three stolen cars in the vicinity along with a bb gun.

Investigators are aware of the similarities of the New Haven robberies and several Hamden incidents,” New Haven police spokesman Capt. Anthony Duff stated in a release issued Thursday evening. He asked people with information about the crimes to call 203 – 946-6304.

Yale Police Chief Ronnell Higgins reported on some of the carjackings in a letter to the university community: Two teenage males brandished a handgun and stole a car from in front of 600 State St.at approximately 3:30 pm. A short while later, another carjacking occurred in front of 9 High Street. That vehicle was last seen traveling on George Street away from the downtown area. The third reported carjacking occurred at 1450 Chapel Street. Subsequently, Hamden Police are reporting two additional carjackings in their town. No injuries have been reported at this time.”

WTNH interviewed one of the victims and two witnesses. Its report follows:
