Longtime city Health Director William Quinn will step down on Feb. 1.

Quinn is retiring after 21 years. He will continue to work for the government as a contractor, the city announced on Thursday

He’ll be finishing up a project called the city’s Health Equity Alliance (HEA). The program helps to determine the health needs of neighborhoods in New Haven, so that the city can better serve its communities, said mayoral spokeswoman Jessica Mayorga.

As a contractor, Quinn will receive compensation in addition to his retirement benefits, Mayorga said. She said she does not know how long the HEA project will take to complete.

I’ve experienced an enjoyable 21 years with the city, but it’s the right time for me to move on to something new,” Quinn said in a press release.

Community Services Administrator Chisara Asomugha, will serve as the acting director of the city’s health department until a new hire is made.
