State police caught up with the driver they believe crashed into and killed a motorcyclist on I‑95.
They announced on Sunday that they have arrested the driver, a 25-year-old Fair Haven man, in connection with the incident.
They said the man was driving a 1991 Acura Integra north of northbound Exit 47 around 12:20 a.m. Saturday when he changed from the right-center to the right lane “at a high rate of speed” and struck a Yamaha motorcycle being driven in the right lane by Ricardo Enrique Figueroa-Garcia, 19, of Dover Street in Fair Haven.
The collision ejected Figueroa-Garcia from his motorcycle and into the air. By the time emergency crews arrived, he was dead.
And the driver of Acura was gone. He had ditched his car on the side of the road and fled.
State police said they discovered the identity of the Acura driver and arrested him Sunday at 3:20 a.m. on a warrant for evading responsibility for a death. He was also charged with a separate violation of a standing protective order.
He is being held on $1 million bond for the evading charge and $250,000 bond for the alleged violation of the protective order. He is scheduled to appear in court in Milford on Monday on the latter charge and in New Haven Tuesday on the former charge.
The speeding on I-95 is truly scary and the lane changes only add to the danger.
Speeding and disregard for red lights, stop signs and people in crossings is everywhere.
There will continue to be fatalities as long as some people think they are too special to follow the posted speed limits.
I was almost rear ended at a light in downtown New Haven when I stopped on a yellow light that rapidly changed to red. Yes, It's the law to stop on yellow. but cars routinely race thru red lights regardless.
