Cops Break Up
Elm City Bowl Brawl

Cops put a quick end to a fight that broke out in the stands of the annual Thanksgiving Wilbur Cross-Hillhouse football showdown, arresting two 19-year-olds and four minors.

Here’s what happened, according to Capt. Leo Bombalicki, the supervisor at the scene.

The fight erupted just after halftime was called in Thursday’s event. Some 20 people were quickly involved.

Police swooped in and broke it up within moments. No one was seriously injured. No guns were involved.

Police arrested the six people on charges of inciting a riot and breach of peace. One of the six arrestees also had an outstanding warrant for domestic violence.

There was such coverage by school security and the school resource officers, that the fight was probably done in maybe a minute,” Bombalicki said.

The brawlers identified themselves as members of the Kensington Street and Newhallville-based R2 gangs, according to Bomablicki. He said that information couldn’t be confirmed. The two organizations have had an ongoing, sometimes deadly, beef for months. The police chief said a recent local-federal sweep took down the leaders of the R2 organization.

The game-goers were happy that arrests were made, that calm was restored, and that the game could go back to normal,” Bombalicki remarked Friday. It was also a fantastic football game.” Hillhouse won in a squeaker, 30 – 28.
