A New Haven man was found dead inside the Courtyard At Marriott hotel Monday afternoon, prompting a visit by city and state environmental teams.

The incident closed off afternoon rush-hour traffic on Whalley Avenue in front of the hotel between Howe and Dwight streets.

A cleaning person found the man unresponsive” in a room on the third floor, then notified a supervisor, who called for emergency medical help, according to Fire Chief John Alston Jr.

The man was dead at the scene.

There was no evidence of foul play.

Because of unusual items” involved in the man’s demise, officials evacuated four rooms on the third floor and medics checked out the cleaning person, who was fine, Alston said.

The fire department’s hazmat team entered the hotel to make sure there was no danger to people there. When it finished its work, a crew from the state Department of Energy and Environment Protection also headed to the hotel to do an inspection. The state’s medical examiner was en route to the hotel as well in the early evening.

Alston said he did not have an immediate identification of the man who died, who he said is from New Haven.
