Driver Arrested After Striking Cyclist

Police caught up with a driver who struck a cyclist on the Farmington Canal Trail and then fled the scene.

The collision occurred on the trail near Dixwell Avenue and Goodrich Street, by the New Haven-Hamden border, Saturday around 4:30 p.m.

A 25-year-old New Haven man was riding his bike southbound on the trail there when a car traveling westbound struck him, according to Hamden police spokesman Capt. Ronald Smith.

The driver, a 33-year-old New Haven woman, drove away, according to Smith. Hamden cops found her at a Hamden residence and arrested her on charges of evading responsibility and failure to grant right of way.

Meanwhile, Hamden Fire Rescue members came to the crash scene to offer medical assistance. Then the cyclist was taken to Yale New Haven Hospital for treatment of injuries to his ribs and back.
