Three incumbent alders beat their Republican challengers this election. A close race in Ward 1 ended with Democratic incumbent Sarah Eidelson victorious over Republican challenger Ugonna Eze by a thin margin of 386 to 369 votes.

In Ward 11, incumbent Barbara Constantinople beat Republican challenger Ron Codianni with 572 votes to his 74. And Ward 18’s Sal DeCola won 632 votes to Republican candidate Lisa Milone’s 177 and unaffiliated candidate Bob Proto’s 123.

Three other unaffiliated candidates continued — and lost—battles from the Democratic primaries. Ward 14 incumbent Santiago Berrios-Bones faced Democratic challenger Thomas Burwell and won 285 to 103.

The other two fought for seats they had lost during the September primary election. In Ward 28, Claudette Robinson-Thorpe lost to Jill Marks 222 to 496. Richard Spears in Ward 12 lost to Gerald Antunes 59 to 240.

After a 2013 charter referendum vote, New Haven’s Board of Education will have two voting members for the first time. The city was split into two voting districts. Darnell Goldson was unchallenged in District 2. Democrat Edward Joyner beat Republican Jim O’Connell in District 1.

They will take their seats in January 2016.
