Former Fire Chief Michael Grant Dies

Godspeed Chief Grant.. you will be missed by many.

When I think of Michael Grant I see the John Wayne version of a firefighter. The man had a larger than life presence but yet was one of the most soft-spoken people I've ever had the pleasure to know. No matter the issue, wether personal or professional, he would always make time for you.

For his patience under adversity, for his courage in dangerous situations, for his modesty in success, I am filled with an emotion of admiration. Chief Grant will forever be a part of New Haven's history.

For his life-long courage, for his inspiring modesty and for his selfless devotion to the NHFD and the city of New Haven, which he served so well, I am filled with admiration. And while there are no words so magnanimous that I can deliver today to fully describe my gratitude, I'll simply say, thank you for decades of bravery. You will be missed.

Hartman13- Your reference to his modesty nailed it. That is what I remember about him, competence and quiet modesty. That and a conversation I had with him about how important it is to have smoke detectors and a plan to exit your home in case of a fire. I don't remember exactly what he said, but he certainly impressed on me what a nightmare it would be to be trapped in a fire.

I am filled with such sadness hearing of Mike Grant's passing. May he be remembered for the true gentleman that he was and for his admirable career in the New Haven Fire Department. Prayers to his family as well as all the wonderful men and women in the fire department who had the privilege of serving under him.
