Gas Leak Shuts Down Block

Residents of four buildings on a downtown block were told to stay inside Monday as emergency workers fixed a broken gas main.

The incident occurred on Crown Street between York and High streets between 11 a.m. and noon.

Southern Connecticut Gas Company was responded to watch it though was a minor gas leak” after striking a main, then discovered it was a much bigger leak than they were anticipating,” reported Deputy Fire Chief Bruce Galaski. The company called the fire department for help. People inside four buildings on the block, including the 100 York St. (University Towers) and 127 York St. apartment complexes, were ordered to stay inside for an hour. And HVAC systems were shut off. Police shut off the block to car traffic and pedestrians.

The repairs were completed within the hour and no one was hurt, according to Galaski.
