Man Found In Trash Can Died From Stabbing

The chief medical examiner’s office reported on Monday that the man found in a trash can on Sheffield Avenue on Thursday was stabbed to death.

It was a homicide, according to the medical examiner’s office.

The man’s name was Jerry Atkins, according to the office. He was 59 years old. Police found him wrapped in plastic in the trash behind a sober house.

The police obtained a search warrant to check the premises. Monday afternoon police investigators were inside the house’s second floor.

The Gun Was Cocked

Police said when they caught up to a man trying to sneak away from the scene of an arrest, they found a fully loaded — and cocked — .357 Magnum in his waist band.

Here’s what happened, according to police spokesman Officer Joe Avery:

Officers responded to a breach of police complaint at 1:35 a.m. on Monday at 126 Shelton Ave. As they were detaining two women, a 18-year-old man started to walk away from the scene. Officer David Stratton asked him to stop; he continued to walk. Officer Stratton was able to get close to the man and stop him. As he was patting him down, the man pulled away and started running. Stratton was able to catch him and bring him to the ground.

Officer Ryan Przybylski helped secure the man after a brief struggle. He found a fully loaded and cocked Smith & Wesson .357 Magnum in the man’s front pocket. The gun had been reported stolen in Colorado.

Purse Snatched, Recovered

A purse was taken in the Beinecke Plaza on Wall Street at 2:14 a.m. on Sunday. It was recovered shortly thereafter.

Here’s what happened, according to Yale chief of police James Perrotti:

A Yale undergraduate walking on the plaza was approached from behind by a man who took her purse and phone. University police responded and were able to catch the 20-year-old purse-snatcher. Police recovered the purse.
