Local activist and philanthropist Wendy Hamilton files a registration form in the City Clerk’s office Thursday to run for mayor.
She marked her party affiliation as Democratic. She also checked off a box to denote that she will not form a candidate committee to raise money.
Hamilton told the Independent she hopes to qualify for the Democratic mayoral ballot.
“I must be in the debates no matter what as a voice for decency and regime change,” she stated. “If I have to walk every street and get each signature alone I will do it or die trying.”
Democratic incumbent Mayor Toni Harp said she plans to run this year for a fourth two-year term. Justin Elicker, who ran against Harp in 2013, filed papers this week to run in a Democratic primary; he said he is reserving the option of running as an independent candidate in November if he loses the primary.

Wendy, a favor: going forward, could you please better consider where you promote yourself and your run for mayor? I was disappointed to see you at Wednesday night's Board of Alders' Education Committee Public Hearing on School Discipline handing out stickers and talking loudly while people testified and then using the opportunity to testify to talk about running for mayor. Run if you want, and go wherever you want, but you were disruptive on Wednesday and it was a bummer.
