Joyner Endorsed For Reelection To Ed Board

Who made atheists? Or polytheists? Invoking "the One God" is inclusive of the Abrahamic religions, but exclusive of many others who now form a substantial portion of America's population.

Jim O'Connell has several degrees, over 40 years experience in education, is a life long city resident and worked as a paramedic for many years in New Haven County, probably saving many lives. Should be an interesting race!

Dr. Joyner has 50+ years experience as a professional educator. He has a doctorate degree in education. He served as a teacher and administrator in the NHPS for many years, positively impacting the lives of thousands of New Haven students. He has taught at the college and university level, training teachers and school administrators. He worked for several years with Dr. James Comer at the Yale Child Study Center. Joyner is a nationally known educational consultant who has worked with numerous school districts across the United States.
He has served two terms on the BOE, and has committed his life to working for quality education for the youth of this city.
Dr. Joyner and Mr. O'Connell have competed with each other twice before for this board seat. They had at least one public debate in the past. Mr. O'Connell also is an experienced educator and a fine gentleman who wants what is best for the students of this city.
In the past, both men ran positive campaigns focusing only on the major issues confronting our school district. This present campaign should be no different.
The public should give both men a fair hearing, and then cast their votes for the individual they believe to be the best person to serve on the Board of Education for the next four years.

According to Pew Research 7% in the US are non-Christian. That is NOT substantial.

Ed Joyner is a BOE member who challenged a fellow member to a duel. .... The Board is embarrassing to watch. If you want more of the same; vote to keep the same old same old on the BOE.

One thing for sure this endorsement is well deserved! Having high marks in academia and experience in his younger years proves he is more than qualified to sit on our board. Dr. Joyner is so well tuned with the NHPS system as an former educator for 50+ years and a parent who has educated his children through the NHPS system..unlike a board member whose child does not attend the system that this other board member so dearly cares about. Dr. Joyner is professional, gives sound advice with much thought, and has good character. Just an outright noble man!
In addition to being a upright family man he is respectful, honest and competent...there is a big difference between a board member who has empathy verses sympathy.. Dr. Joyner shows great empathy, mentors and has a clear vision for the board, communicates with the community of the NHPS's progress, challenges and understands the fiscal budget and the importance to make sound decisions that affect the budget!

so Walk your Walk and Talk your Talk Dr. Joyner..

Dr. Joyner gets a pass in my book and others if had a disagreement with another board member of what he so heartly cares about!

If CityYankee is a Christian, he should know about grace, forgiveness, justification and reconciliation.
Dr. Joyner long ago apologized for that uncharacteristic emotional outburst he made at the meeting in which the unfortunate and politically tainted and politically coerced decision was made by the BOE to select the least qualified, least experienced candidate to be superintendent.
Joyner was passionate in his opposition to that candidate, as were many parents, teachers and students in this community. He was fighting against something he firmly believed was not a decision that would be in the best interests of the NHPS or its students. In the heat of debate, he said some things he later regretted, but he never regretted the correctness of his position.
Of course, everyone now knows and many now admit, that Joyner and others who voted that day not to appoint that candidate were right! It was a tragic and costly error that required huge sums of money to correct.
So if City Yankee wants to dig up the past, he would be advised to know and tell the whole context of what he intended to dredge up to attempt to slander one of the most respected and honorable citizens and educators in this city.

Look like the duel is water under the bridge...and bringing up this incident was mute before your comment was submitted!

Dear BFLY-- the incident is indeed in the past but it still happened; apology or no and the actions say something about Dr. Joyner. So , the point is NOT MOOT.

CityYankee: You mean non-Christian, but religious, labeled by Pew as "Non-Christian faiths". Unless you consider atheists and agnostics Christian. I don't know of any study, but my guess would be that New Haven's share of Jews is greater than the 2% national share, and its share of Moslems, Hindus and Buddhists , and unfaithful is higher, too. New Haven's been losing churches for decades.

The challenge to a duel may have happened in the past, it does not take away the impression it left. That is NOT what I expect to see from a leader. Although he has not requested a duel since then his actions are still aggressive and hostile! In my opinion he does not vote based on what is based for the children he votes based on who he likes!
We need a CHANGE! He has voted against giving our Paraprofessional raises BUT he always votes in favor of a raise in central office....the immaturity and lack of professionalism on this board is beyond embarrassing!

If a man brings up another man's past mistake which has long been a settled issue, the intent of that man is to denigrate and insult the character of the person. It is not an act kindness, sympathy or empathy. It is an act of a coldhearted mudslinger who speaks as though he has never ever misspoken, or ever made a mistake!

When will education activists run for the elected board seats they demanded in the charter revision? I was astonished to see, at a rally in front of City Hall this month, a Board of Education member turn their back on a fellow Board member addressing the crowd. We can do better.

For those who feel that the BOE membership needs to change, your desires will be fulfilled.
At the end of this year, the terms of two appointed board members will expire, and the Mayor will appoint two new board members, or reappoint those two individuals.
The odds are highly against the reappointment of the two Harp appointees.

Ed Joyner is someone I aspire to be like--he is special, he is inspirational, he is JOY, he is humble, he is grateful and he has made the world a better place by his words and his deeds--selfless, caring, empathetic and able in so many ways--he is a blessing (just talk to him for a few minutes and you will understand what a treasure he is). The Republican candidate makes promises that he cannot legally fulfill. The Mayor only has one vote on the board and cannot arbitrarily alter the budget. It would do well for anyone running for public office to know the rules and statutes relevant to the specific office. It would be nice to know if the candidate agrees with the policies of the Secretary of Education in the previous administration.
