Long Wharf Vendors Fight Back

After the city yanked their permits in the wake of a dispute involving weapons, two food vendors have appealed to the city to let them continue selling food.

The city on Friday afternoon revoked the licenses of two Puerto Rican food carts, Lechonera La Unica and La Pinchera, said city building chief Andy Rizzo. The order came after the owners of the two carts were arrested during a fight. Police said one of them pulled a knife, and the other one’s brother pulled a gun: Click here for background.

The revocations were effective upon receipt of two letters sent Friday by state marshal, Rizzo said.

Since then, both vendors have appealed the ruling. That means they’ll get to make their case in a hearing before Rizzo. The arresting officers will be present, too, Rizzo said.

Rizzo said he’ll make the final call on the penalty for the fight. He can suspend their licenses, revoke them, or take away their privileges at Long Wharf.

The hearing for the first vendor, Jose Ortiz, Jr. of La Unica (pictured above, with Jose Ortiz III), is scheduled for 11:30 a.m. Thursday.
