Man Critical After Daylight Norton-Whalley Shooting

@ 2:20pm, on a Tuesday, on a major thoroughfare....

Ya think just a few investors are rethinking their respective 2021-226 plans for projects in HVN??

I'm not Winstanley, Fusco, YNHH$$, or the quintuplets of 'renewal' housing in Wooster square & Hill-west......but I am rethinking future investment in the 'wild West' of New Haven County.

TommyBrnfrd -The corner of Whalley and Norton has a long past with gun violence. It also has a long history of traffic accidents. It is a heavily trafficked main thoroughfare through the city which is nearby several poorer neighborhoods with lots of pedestrian traffic, stores, and restaurants nearby that cater to residents. New Haven's issues with gun violence and traffic violence occur in almost all the exact same locations in around the city over the last 50+ years, and usually impacts people who knew each other in some fashion. The city is experiencing a rise in crime and violence numbers these past 2 years, as is every other urban area across the country. Prior to the pandemic, our the economy was doing well, unemployment was low, and the crime and violence rates were much lower than in previous years. Most long time established developers and property owners with history in this city are well aware of the history and the statistics, and have continued to invest in New Haven. If recently arrived to the city investors and developers are scared off by crime statistics, you're likely going to find the same problems in other cities and large towns with lots of lower income residents. So you can become part of the solution by working with anti-violence groups and city departments to try to contribute to making things better in some manner, or you can try to get past zoning restrictions and build apartment buildings in the suburbs. Investing in cities is not for the faint of heart.

Gentrification doesn't seem too bad. Investors need to invest. I know it would also mean good people could not live here either , but I'm tired of this. There are nights I can not sleep or watch my television, or read a good book because the neighbor plays her music on the porch to late in the evening. I'm tired. Something needs to be done. Black Lives Don't Matter to many in the Black Community including the movement who has not protested against the violence perpetuated by black people on black people. Their agenda is to defund the police at the cost of safety to the whole community. What a Joke.

The city is a mess. There are fewer and fewer places residents can travel without being worried about getting caught in the middle of a gunfight.

Heather C: Considering the Yale Corp is a financial behemoth sitting on $33+ billion in its endowment - enough to provide free college for its students - its continued refusal to hide behind the anachronistic tax exemption reminds me of the Sackler family. They both have profited from something, but then disavow any responsibility.
I am not persuaded.
We need a massive plan for our troubled cities, paid for by a return to progressive taxation or any other means of re-distributing the wealth to insure the pursuit of happiness for all.

As far as defund the police.You have some police departments who have to many units they do not need.

Maybe the criminals operating in the area of Whalley Avenue and Norton street wouldn't be so inclined to commit crime if the police were able to use enough physical force to be effective. Criminals understand force and will think twice about committing crime will result in a tough arrest and a trip to the emergency room.

Violent criminals do not respond to violence interdiction efforts, Ice the Beef, counseling and other efforts.

They understand physical force.
They are not afraid of the court system.
Not afraid of incarceration because that is a rest and they can use that time to be a better criminal. Learn from others.

PJ216: Since the courts do nothing, you are proposing that the police met out street justice in the form of criminal assaults? I am all for a return to mass incarceration. The pro-criminal, pro-crime stance of the Democratic Party that runs this state is driving crime up. But police should not be empowered to commit crimes themselves, however much they may want to.

Two Whalley Avenue restaurant owners have noticed a lot of business taking place outside their new storefront. Unfortunately, it's not the kind of business they had hoped for. The husband-wife business duo discussed witnessing panhandling in their restaurant, and drug deals and drug overdoses right outside of their shop on a daily basis.

It would be great for New Haven if it's police force was as good at preventing these shootings as they are at setting up sophisticated multi-officer speed traps.

Well maybe others aren't shocked, but I am. This is my neighborhood. I walk or bike to this corner to go to Edge of the Woods. Shooting on this corner at mid-day in broad daylight! We need adequate police presence at these hot spots along Whalley Avenue. "Defund the police" when people are getting shot in the streets is just ridiculous.

I remember a roll call many years when 2 older police captains took cops to task for being too soft. The incident that sparked that comment was a creep who bit a police officer and punched another in the eye. Cops went to the hospital. The crook didn't and that emboldened him to assault others. The other cases ended with the use of a night stick. He never assaulted anyone again.

Let police use physical force, appropriate use of force, or continue to let criminal mutts ruin the quality of life fir everyone.

During the early stages on the pandemic cops where inexistent. New Haven / Hamden clearly. Let's be serious cops in the city seem to patrol / standby the areas / locations with little to none history of violence and crime. I personally know current NHPD officers that couldn't handle inner city juveniles when serving that position for the state. When it rains it pours nothing in between. I recall my late teen age years cops / police sorta running the streets .. now it seems as if anything goes.

We live in a lawless city. Here is a prime example of a problem spot that was identified a year ago on Whalley Ave. During that time there has been a homicide and stabbing at this location. What have Alder Furlow and the city done - not much.

Police should use only as much force as needed to arrest the offender, not engage in gratuitous can criminal assaults for purposes of punishing or teaching a lesson. To me, this task is necessary and simple to do. When the public demands it, it will happen.

The U.S. government either redistributes the wealth or we face an almost certain revolution and the development of a superior system, socialism.
