After a two-and-a-half month lull, New Haven had another murder late Tuesday, the second in less than a week.
Police found a young man believed to be in his late teens or early 20s in a backyard on Hilltop Place, at the foot of West Rock Park, according to police spokesman Officer David Hartman.
Calls had started coming about four or five shots fired around 10:30 p.m. Police swept the area, including South Genessee Street in the McConaughy Terrace projects, scene of a recent incident involving gunfire, to no avail. Then someone called 911 to report the body lying in the backyard. Police arrived to find a man shot to death, with, according to one unconfirmed account, bullet wounds in both his head and heart.
Anyone with information about the homicide is asked to call the cops at 203 – 946-6296.

After a 10 year old girl was run over and killed by a speeder running a red light, the City decided to dramatically widen Whalley Avenue though this area last year. Now, the Top 1% commuters from Bethany and Woodbridge can speed through much more quickly, and the area feels much more like a death trap. The NHPD says it can not be enforced because it is too dangerous for officers to be there.
Seriously, what message do these actions send to youth in this area? When your government constantly tells kids that their neighborhood doesn't matter except as a highway, and that they should have to risk their lives just to go for a walk, what kind of behavior would you expect? Kids are not stupid.
