Nice talking points by Mr. Marchand. Now let's get to the facts. Marchand works for Yale's UNITE HERE union. Period. Full Stop. For Adam UNITE HERE comes first and the homeowners and taxpayers of New Haven come last.
The fact is in Westville property crime is up 20% and other crime (which includes drug crimes and vandalism) is also up 20%. Those stats are from the latest COMPSTAT reports. The Westville Quality Market has been robbed by gunpoint twice in the last year, and a month ago 2 people were robbed at gunpoint in the area of Alden Ave. On Saturday the police were investigating a shooting and were focusing on the area of Dayton and Whalley. And, his call for more police patrols rings hollow. The reality is he is the Chair of the Finance Committee and there is not enough money in the budget for more police. For him, it simply was not a priority.
When it comes to traffic calming, the Westville Community has been begging for a 4-Way stop at Yale and Chapel for as long as he's been an Alder. But Adam's relationships aren't good enough to even get the community a 4 way stop sign.
When it comes to development, Adam tried to sink the conversion of the historic Pirelli building to a hotel because the owners didn't commit to hiring union labor. Why? Unite here first, taxpayers last!
On taxes, Adam as Chair of the Finance Committee was the architect of last year's 11% tax hike. A $550 million budget and he wasn't able to find any place to cut expenses.
This year he approved the hiring of more UNION tree trimmers at a cost of $225K a year rather than outsource the work to contractors who could do the work for less and do it sooner. The City has more than $400 million in unfunded pension liabilities and apparently Adam thinks it's a good idea to add more pension obligations. And during the budget hearings, he remained silent as Dr. Birk's presented a faux $30 million deficit mitigation plan with no details.

Someone please run against this guy! He actually has no interest in the needs or wants if the folks that live in his city. Research his efforts to block the city health department from providing an easy access clinic for its citizens! He instead pushed to block for outside interests...why block something for the benefit of your own city constituents?!
He also does not get back to certain types of his constituents. GET HIM OUT!

I'm a constituent of Adam's.

I agree with some of his decisions, disagree with others; when I disagree, he's always willing to make time to talk about it, and I feel that he listens even when he doesn't change his mind.

He truly works hard, and his family make major sacrifices so that he can be a public servant. He sends multiple email updates to the ward throughout the week/month, and he attends his meetings.

It's easy to trash people you disagree with, but try to have some compassion. Adam's labor affiliation by no means disqualifies him from holding public office, anymore than it would a member of the Yale faculty or an administrator. Personally, I'd like to see the alders and the mayor challenge Yale more forcefully to live up to their commitments and work with the city. Maybe a new administration can figure out creative ways to do that.

In any event, I'll be voting Marchand in ward 25 along with a lot of other people.

@TimHolahan, pehaps you and your neighbors in Ward 25 can persuade Adam to draft guidelines regarding alders' recusal when conflicts of interest arise. For now, the union alders operate on the principle that this is just "leverage", and the more they have, the better. We are seeing this attitude writ large in the country, now.

No doubt Adam is a good person, and a good family man. And I find him to be witty and very personable. I just disagree with him politically. I'm not anti-union. In fact, I think unions play an important role. But elected officials must put their allegiance to the City ahead of any commitment to any union. But, it's more than his union ties that I take issue with. As the Chair of the Finance Committee he ought to be scrutinizing every line item in the budget and he isn't. I attended a couple of the budget hearings this year and asked close to 20 question of the committee. Not one Alder answered any of my questions, or any of the questions asked by Gary Doyens and others. That's simply unacceptable.


I won't be voting for Adam. Nice guy. But he's ineffective. A vote for Adam is a vote for the status quo and the status quo these days means 11% tax hikes. We had an 11% tax hike last year, and we will have another one next year because the budget approved by the BOA is a ruse; the City will run a huge deficit next year and need a tax hike to close the year. But by the time the fiscal year ends the election will conveniently be in the rear view mirror.

Marchand instead should really file his resignation, he has been the mount piece crony for the administration for 8 years now betraying the interest of the New Haven taxpayer in support of the union BOA leadership and their continued support of the Harp failed policies... get rid of him...
