(Updated) A Federal Express delivery truck driver whose vehicle struck and killed a 55-year-old pedestrian is cooperating with investigators looking into the incident.
The collision occurred at Chapel and Temple streets Thursday around 5:40 p.m.
The pedestrian, a woman, was beginning to walk northbound across Chapel at the corner of Temple. The 31-year-old Bridgeport Fed Ex driver was traveling eastbound into the intersection, according to police spokesperson Capt. Anthony Duff. The truck struck the woman. The driver kept driving.
The woman was pronounced dead at the scene. (Update: Police Monday identified the victim as Maria Luisa Morales, age 55, of New Haven.)
Cops later found the truck nearby on George Street. “The truck operator is cooperating with the investigation,” Duff wrote in a release issued Friday morning.
The incident — including details related to who was at fault — remains under investigation by the NHPD Accident Reconstruction Team.
“Witnesses who have not yet spoken to police are asked to contact the New Haven Police Department at 203 – 946-6316,” Duff stated.
My heart goes out to the family and friends of this victim of traffic violence. I hope that with such a conspicuous vehicle, the driver will be brought to justice swiftly. No one should have to die while crossing a street. Cities need to be designed to prioritize people, not vehicles. I don't care if your commute gets lengthened by a few minutes due to safety measures in place. I would rather that my neighbors live another day.
I also wish the police department would drop the term "accident" from their vocabulary. "Accident" implies all parties are blameless and that nothing could have been done to prevent this. Crash or collision are more neutral terms to use until fault or no fault can be determined. I thank the NHI for being aware of this in their own reporting.
