Welcome to the new officers! Most police officers don't want to live in the same city in which they work, for many reasons. And the job is open to anyone from any town. If New Haven wants more members living in New Haven, then the city needs to provide incentives. Frankly, when I call 911 for police assistance I'm not concerned with the sex, race, or home town of the person responding.

Are you against New Haveners being hired in the suburbs cause they don't live there?

Clearly NHPD needs to do more serious recruiting in the cities and large diverse population towns. If you've never lived in a city with all its diversity and unique social issues, or in a town with a large diverse population or social issues, how can you understand and relate to the people you will be policing? And how can they relate to you? If you have more people who grew up in a city or large town with the same amount of diversity or social issues, working as police officers, then you will have officers who will understand and relate to the people they've been hired to protect and serve.

Fitzy14: Ideally, yes. The "professionalization" of police has alienated them from the communities that employ them. They are literally, hired guns, rather than part of the community, integrated into its fabric. The police are outsiders, serving themselves first and foremost. At least, that's the culture I now see in my town, Branford, listening to our present chief and more recent chief (now chief of North Branford). For Branford, I want someone who went to Branford High School, not someone from New Haven, or Clinton, or Monroe, regardless of what degree or other qualification they may have. What does someone from Monroe know of New Haven? I doubt he knows the difference between Newhallville and Dixwell any more than most New Haveners know the difference between Hotchkiss Grove and Pine Orchard, how many " Green Island"s we have or where Scum Beach is in Branford.

Heather C - While I agree with you that growing up in a city with a diverse population makes you are better able to relate to the people you are protecting and serving in our city, you can't judge 6 people on where they are living now.

The make up of these officers is a direct result of the importance of local recruitment by NHPD leadership. I had high hopes for Chief Reyes, but that has since fizzled away. New strong leadership all around the city is needed, NHPD, Mayor and Superintentant.

Due to residency points given to New Haven residents they are depleted by a certain point on the civil service list. I would imagine by this point there were no New Haven residents left on the list. A passing score is 70. Residency gets you 10 points so no resident will have a score less than 80. Looking at the list and the scores of these applicants they were at that point.

the NHPD does recruit heavily in New Haven. Are you of the opinion that only people from the city can work with people who live in the city, or that people can only work with people of their own racial or cultural background?

1644, what is your point about the duck? Because the Clinton PD is investigating the theft of a duck, people from the suburbs can't work in New HAven?

Let's not be fooled not too many people in this climate want to even apply for the job so we shouldn't care what they look like or where they are from.

New Haven goes out of their way for recruitment from the city. Unfortunately, not too many people want to apply from here because of the —— the police mentality. Some or those who apply can't pass the background process.

If you spent your whole life in a wealthy and mostly white suburb or small town in the country, you have no experience with people who didn't grow up that way, and your only exposure to people with a different race, ethnicity or income level from you is through the images presented by the media and popular culture and your opinions are formed by those influences and the expressed opinions of the people around you who also grew up in a similar manner to you.

By your comment (shown above) I guess the reverse must also be true for a person of color applying for a position in a 'wealthy mostly white suburb'?

Perspective- nope, police looking for kidnapped ducks, asking the local teenagers to break up their party, every so often dealing with cars that have been left unlocked and someone took something from them, the occasional domestic or drug related incident, or once in a blue moon a dead body, in predominately white or wealthy communities is a piece of cake compared to policing the larger towns or the cities in the state. And you can't insulate yourself from white culture, nor can you be willfully ignorant of it. It is the predominant culture of our society, and there is no escaping it to a homogeneous community removed from it in our country.
