A domestic violence call led to an armed man barricaded inside his house — then surrendering without conflict.
The standoff occurred Wednesday. Here’s what happened, according to police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway:
It started with the domestic violence call from Winthrop Avenue between Percival Street and Whalley Avenue. Police arrived around 1:40 p.m. to find the victim outside. The victim told them her 18-year-old attacker was still inside the house — with a handgun.
Officers surrounded the house. They tried to convince him to come outside. He remained inside.
The SWAT team and negotiation team showed up. They “were able to talk” the man “out of the home without further incident,” Shumway wrote in a release issued Thursday. They subsequently obtained a search warrant, went inside the house, and recovered a .40 caliber Smith & Wesson handgun.
The man is being held on $250,000 bond on charges including criminal possession of a firearm, second-degree strangulation, unlawful restraint, assault on a pregnant person, threatening, and breach of peace.
This could have been a catastrophe.
