For the second time in two days, a young man has been shot dead in the Beaver Hills neighborhood.
The more recent killing took place Saturday shortly before 10 p.m. Someone came up to 17-year-old Travis Washington on Percival Street near Carmel, confirmed he was Travis Washington, then shot him “multiple times” in the chest, police said. He died later at the hospital. Police had Percival and Carmel blocked off Sunday morning as they continued to gather evidence (pictured). A bicycle lay on the sidewalk, marked off as evidence. Among the sites blocked off was the Breaking Chains Ministries Church directly across the street from the shooting scene.
Washington was a student at Hillhouse High School.
Hillhouse Principal Kermit Carolina Sunday said the community is mourning “another senseless death.”
School officials had identified Washington as someone who “needed more individualized attention” because he was struggling during the day, according to Carolina. So he was placed in a small-group afternoon program.
Carolina called the death “another reminder of the vicious cycle we’re faced with — this violence. We have to think outside the box about how we’re going to address this issue. It’s a challenge to all of us.” (Click here for a story on how Carolina has been tackling the high drop-out rate among black males.)
The first fatal incident took place on Diamond Street around 1:50 a.m. Friday, when someone shot 31-year-old former Hillhouse basketball player Donnell Allick repeatedly in the back. “Detectives believe that Allick was specifically targeted and ambushed as the result of suspected domestic dispute,” according to a police press release issued Sunday.
Police ask anyone with information about the killings to call them at 203 – 946-6304.
Sad sad sad.....
I remember a few years (2006 or 07) back I attended a round table at the PD.. minister, community leaders, harp and walker and other political types...all where there. I asked Ortiz and John, what are you going to do to get the guns from the kids in my area and many other areas ( a question community members asked me to ask)... Oritz laughed at me...said I watched to much TV the kids in this city do not have guns...john, harp and walker all laughed as well when I defended my comment and they ignored me and my outrage at that response!
Well they could of stopped alot of this if they had nipped in the freaken bud instead of laughing it off!!! I just get so pissed off when I see another kid with a gun!!! yeah guess my TV is 3d!
