Waiting For A King

One year after aldermen voted to rename North Frontage Road after Martin Luther King, they voted to delay the official dedication just a bit longer — until they can arrange for a member of the King family to come to the renaming ceremony.

That second vote came Tuesday night during a meeting of the Board of Aldermen in City Hall. It was just short of one year after the vote to officially name a major city thoroughfare after the slain civil rights leader.

On Tuesday, aldermen passed a measure that will close a portion of Tyler Street between Legion Avenue and North Frontage Road for an official dedication ceremony. The exact date of that ceremony is to be determined.

We are still in the process of organizing the dedication ceremony,” West River Alderman Yusuf Shah (pictured) told his colleagues. Shah was the mastermind behind the move to rename a city street—originally it was going to be Whalley Avenue—after Dr. King. He said the ceremony is tentatively scheduled for Dec. 11.

That gives the city time to contact the King family, Shah said before the meeting. We’re trying to find who we can get here and how we can sponsor them,” he said. Shah said he’s been working with local church and community leaders, including the Rev. Boise Kimber, to find funds to pay for travel and lodging expenses for whichever King they can bring to the ceremony.

The name of the new portion of the road will be Rev. Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Boulevard.
