The opening of the Novella luxury apartments this week marked the transformation of New Haven’s former red-light district into another outpost in a downtown market-rate housing boom. Is that good for New Haven families and small businesses? Or a sign that they might be pushed out of the new New Haven.
Radio hosts Joe Ugly and Babz Rawls-Ivy (pictured) batted about that question with me on the news-in-review pundits panel on the WNHH radio’s “Dateline New Haven” program.
The discussion also touched on the wisdom of creating niche business districts as well as the fates of Joe Ganim, Hillary Clinton, and Joe Biden. Click on the above sound file to give a listen.
Folks should get used to thousands of new residents coming into New Haven. They will be coming whether we build the new housing or not.
Don't build the tens of thousands of new luxury units, and people who would otherwise rent them instead will be pushing out low income residents out of their homes.
Build enough new units to meet demand and the city will actually become more affordable.
