Police arrested a babysitter for allowing a 2‑year-old boy to wander alone in West Hills. And thieves on Blake Street made off with a Chinese delivery order after at least simulating having a handgun.
Those are among the incidents in top west side cop Lt. Rose Dell’s latest weekly crime report.

FROM 6/29/19 to 7/6/19 POLICE RESPONDED TO 183 CALLS FOR SERVICE IN THE WESTVILLE/WEST HILLS SECTION OF NEW HAVEN. THE FOLLOWING IS A BRIEF SUMMARY OF NOTABLE INCIDENTS:
On 7/1, a resident of Maplewood Road reported that some time on Monday multiple items were stolen from his garage. At 10:30 am, his roommate saw an unknown male leave their driveway on a bicycle with a lawnmower charger in his hand. He then checked the garage and found a lawnmower and hedge trimmer were missing. He believed that the larger items were stolen earlier, and the perp returned later to retrieve the charger. The offender was described as a black male, around 50 years of age, with a dark complexion, close-cut hair, and an average build. He was last seen traveling west on Fountain Street on a black and red bike.
On 7/3, at around 11:30 pm, police responded to Lodge Street on reports of gunfire. A resident was sitting at her kitchen table when she heard a loud bang outside, and the sound of broken glass. She then felt something whizz by her upper lip. Police responded and found what appeared to be a bullet hole in the kitchen window. No projectiles could be located that night, but one was found by the washing machine a few days later.
Police responded to the apartment complex at 400 Blake Street on the report of a robbery. A Chinese delivery driver arrived at the complex and called the individual who placed the order. Around 3 – 4 minutes later, two males began to walk towards his vehicle. One of the males pointed his left hand, which was covered in a towel, at him and grabbed the food. The delivery driver demanded payment, but the male threatened to kill him. The two males ran from the area. The delivery driver exited his vehicle, and in a panic, drew his legally registered firearm and fired one round into the air.
On 7/6, a concerned citizen knocked on the door of the Whalley Avenue substation with a two-year-old boy. She told the Officer that around an hour ago she found the boy wandering around East Ramsdell Street and Valley Street by himself. The child appeared well but hungry, and the Officer fed him some apples, a donut and water. Officer Quintaras McArthur located a neighbor who knew the child and his mother. The mother was contacted, and she was at work and had left the child in the care of a babysitter. The child and mother were reunited, and the babysitter was arrested for Risk of Injury to a minor.
