Horace Lawhorn Jr., 83

Horace Big Jun” Lawhorn Jr., 83, of New Haven, Connecticut passed away on July 9, 2018.

He was born on Oct. 20, 1934, to the late Horace, Sr. and Fannie Smith Lawhorn. Horace attended elementary school in Camden, S.C. and graduated from Jackson, High School.

Horace, who was affectionately known as Jun” and Big Jun,” was employed by Armstrong Rubber Company, in West Haven for nearly 20 years, and was the owner of the local moving company Lawhorn’s General Hauling for over 40 years. Horace enjoyed fishing and traveling to his birthplace. He frequented the New Haven flea market on the Boulevard to purchase fresh fruit and vegetables and was an avid visitor of the New Haven Long Wharf, where he would relax, read the newspaper and enjoy the shoreline.

Horace was also active in his local neighborhood block watch and volunteered at St. Martin de Porres breakfast ministry. Horace was as a member of the East Rock Lodge No. 141 Improved Benevolent and Protective Order Elks of the World, Inc. in New Haven for over 50 years.

He leaves to cherish his memory, loving wife, Clara A. Lawhorn, stepdaughters, the Honorable Robin L. Wilson, Superior Court Judge, of New Haven, Tanya Vaughn of California and Jackie Scott of Bridgeport, and stepson, Derick Vaughn of New Haven, brothers, Eugene Lawhorn of California, Arthur Lawhorn (Evelyn) of North Haven, and James Lawhorn (Margaret) and sister Betty Jane Spencer of Camden, S.C. and a host of relatives and friends. Horace was predeceased by his brothers, Curtis, Donald, and Charles.

A celebration of Horace’s life will take place on Tuesday at 11 a.m. at Bethel AME Church, 255 Goffe Street, New Haven, CT, 06511. Friends may call Tuesday at the church from 9 a.m. to 11 am. Interment will be private. Services by Howard K.
