How is it possible for any one to say New Haven is safe when we have shootings several times a week and fatalities every other week?
Until we deal with the root causes of crime - poverty, lack of shelter, inadequate medical care and a failure to provide safety nets - we will see the worst in people and not the best.
Another mother/ father's child is lost.
When does this stop?

We Americans live in a gun-saturated society. We have the unique distinction of being the sole nation on earth that has more guns than people.
We also have the world record of the most deaths by varying forms of gun violence, accidental gun deaths, and suicide by guns. We are a nation with an over 200 year gun culture with an unprecedented guarantee incorporated in our 18th century CONSTITUTION to protect our right to arm ourselves!
We are a nation whose national legislature, bought by the NRA, which refuses to pass reasonable gun control.
New Haven is no isolated segment of this nation exempt from our great national carnage of gun violence! Hundreds are shot or killed by shots daily in America.
A large percentage of the shot and killed are NOT victims of random shooters. They are shot and killed by family members, friends, acquaintances.
I've lived in New Haven nearly 70 years. Most people I know here have never been shot, never been the victims of violent crime, never been killed by guns.
New Haven doesn't have the most gun violence per capita or the least. But here is the rude awakening. New Haven and other cities its size is about as safe a city as you can get in America!
Poverty, lack of housing, inadequate medical care have nothing to do with gun violence.
Easy access to guns has everything to do with it.
There is poverty and homelessness and poor medical care around the world, but none of the counties with those problems kill their own people with guns like we do!!! Not one!

What we see with gun violence in America, rural, urban, and suburban, does not happen in most countries around the world.
Gun violence and gun homicides to the degree that we see in America will STOP when this nation casts off the shackles of the NRA and the gun manufacturers, and WE THE PEOPLE force Congress to pass strict gun control laws emulating those in Britain, Japan, Australia, Canada and so many other countries.
One would think that after so many of our kids have been killed in school shootings across the country, that our government would have moved swiftly to address and resolve this great American gun dilemma. But the pro-gun SECOND AMENDMENT extremists who have twisted the ORIGINAL INTENT of that amendment, turned deaf ears to the cries of the PUBLIC and the cries of the blood of the slaughtered!
This is a national issue that warrants a national response!
We need to limit the number of guns in this country, ban assault weapons, place reasonable restrictions on gun ownership.
We need our nation to have more people than we have guns.
If other countries can succeed in limiting guns, gun violence, and gun deaths, so can the United States!
Where there is a WILL, there is a WAY!
THE PEOPLE WILLS IT SO. OUR GOVERNMENT STANDS IN THE WAY!

My condolences to the loved ones of the deceased. I hope that witness will come forward with information leading to the arrests of the shooters.
If you know the persons responsible, stand up, speak out, say no more to gun violence.
Talk to anti gun violence activists, to your religious or community leaders, your teachers, to the police, to whoever will intervene to prevent retaliation and stop more gun violence in this city.
The lives you will save by doing this will make our city safer, and help keep more people alive and unharmed.

Human nature us the same around the world. Laws, customs and traditions are not.
Poverty, homelessness, unemployment, mental illness, and forms of violence are present around the world, but no nation comes close to the tragic record of violence and deaths by GUNS that this nation holds!
More guns, easy access to guns lead to more gun deaths. Fewer guns, less access to guns will lead to a decline in gun deaths like we see in other nations!
Common sense. Simple logic.

Poverty as a cause of violence makes sense at first glance but withers when you give it some thought. In total, we are the richest nation on the planet. Even those that we consider poor have more access to food, education, medicine...etc than half the nations in the world. Blaming poverty is a slick government plow to try to get more $$ flowing to one's district or town.

Access to guns is a very big part of the problem. Unfortunately, that horse is out of the barn. Someone posted that there are more guns than people in the US. Think about that. It will never happen, but what would be the result if we outlawed guns tomorrow? A bunch of unhappy hunters and target shooters. Criminal WILL NEVER turn in their guns. Maybe some law abiding citizens will disarm and leave themselves open to more criminal activity (but don't count on it)

No ask yourself about the 90% of counties in the US where gun violence is at or near zero. What is the difference? Two things 1) those with guns have been taught proper respect, handling, and process for using guns 2) the governments and police in those areas do not tolerate gun violence. The result of those actions is the elimination of gun violence (with the exception of when someone comes from out of town and commits crimes).

You get what you tolerate. Proven in New Haven and in far away lands.
