(Updated) Somebody shot and killed 26-year-old New Havener Tyrese Alexander Blue Jr. at the intersection of Cedar and Cassius Streets in the Hill Saturday night.
New Haven Police Department spokesperson Sgt. Cherelle Carr delivered news of that latest city homicide in a Sunday morning press release.
She wrote that, at around 8:36 p.m. Saturday, city police received a report of an unresponsive person at the intersection of Cedar and Cassius.
“Fire and American Medical Response personnel responded to the location,” Carr continued. “Upon arrival, they located a twenty-six-year-old unresponsive male suffering from a gunshot wound to the chest. Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR) was rendered, on scene. After several attempts to render aid, Fire personnel pronounced the victim deceased.”
Carr did not identify who the victim was in her initial press release. In a Monday morning followup press release, Carr identified the victim as Tyrese Alexander Blue Jr. of New Haven.
Police secured a crime scene, she wrote. “It was reported that an argument occurred, and gun fire was heard in the area of the incident.”
Detectives from the Major Crimes Unit and Bureau of Identification responded to the scene to gather evidence and interview witnesses and search for surveillance footage. ShotSpotter was not activated in the area, though “ballistic evidence was found on scene.”
Carr concluded: “This is an ongoing investigation, police are asking anyone who may have witnessed this incident or who may have information valuable to investigators to call detectives at 203 – 946-6304 or through the department’s anonymous tip-line at 866 – 888-TIPS (8477).”
This 26-year-old victim’s shooting death marks the 19th homicide in New Haven so far this year.
Saturday’s shooting death took place a week to the day after the city’s last homicide, when a 30-year-old New Haver named Manuel Miranda was shot and killed on Hobart Street in the early morning of Oct. 7.
Another family has to endure the loss of a loved one. Another murder in the Hill. Another time the mayor will make false promises. Living here for over 50 yrs, I can't tell you how many times I've walked that same corner. Every year, the number of streets and corners one can walk where there hasn't been a murder gets fewer and fewer. Yes, it is a complex problem, but not being tough on crime hasn't helped. We need a change.
