$2.5 Million Fed Subsidy Lands At Tweed

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has allocated a $2.5 million grant to help fund a new terminal at Tweed airport.

The Tweed New Haven Airport Authority announced the grant in a press release on Thursday.

The funding pushes the airport one step closer to constructing a new, larger, carbon-neutral terminal in East Haven, part of a broader airport expansion effort that has proved controversial among nearby residents. Proponents have heralded Tweed’s growth as a spur to future economic growth for the area, while opponents have rallied against it for an expected increase in noise pollution and disruption to local ecosystems.

The press release states the FAA has allotted the $2.5 million to Tweed from a $5 billion pool of federal funds set aside for airport upgrades and renovations as part of the 2021 Bipartisan Infrastructure Law.

According to Tweed spokesperson Andrew King, the airport now estimates that the new terminal will cost between $75 and $100 million, while the runway is expected to cost about $65 million.

King said that Avports, a Goldman Sachs-owned airport management company, has committed to funding the entire cost of the project regardless of how much the federal government subsidizes it.

The FAA grant, King said, will cover part of the design process for the terminal.
