Hamden police arrested a 47-year-old New Haven man and a 42-year-old North Haven man for allegedly stealing $200,000 worth of lead-covered copper flashing from Edgerton Park.

Hamden Police Captain Ronald Smith made the announcement Wednesday afternoon, over four months after the alleged burglars stripped Edgerton Park’s northern stone wall of 42 sections of copper flashing. (Read more about the heist here.)

The metal covering was installed in 2000 as a good neighbor” initiative by the South Central Connecticut Regional Water Authority to protect the century-old wall from the deteriorating effects of water seeping into the mortar and eroding the concrete through freezing and thawing in cold weather.

The loss sustained by Edgerton Park is estimated at $200,000,” Smith wrote. The monetary figure encompasses material and labor.”

Hamden Det. Joseph Liguori did the leg work of the investigation and submitted the arrest warrant applications, which were approved by a Meriden Superior Court judge.

Hamden police arrested the two suspects on Tuesday, and charged them with third-degree larceny, conspiracy to commit larceny in the third-degree, criminal mischief in the first degree, and conspiracy to commit criminal mischief in the first degree.

They were both detained on a court-ordered $5,000 bond,” Smith wrote. They are scheduled to appear in Meriden Superior Court on May 14.”
