2 Cops On Leave After DUI Arrests

I would if it made the news. We have a conduct clause.

My cousin had his CDL and he lost his job. A friend who had a company car with Geico also lost his. So Id say people whose job is directly related to DUIs, the effects of a DUI or DUI offenses can or will lose their job.

They haven't lost their jobs; they're on leave. But yes, that should certainly be a possible outcome for anyone who takes a public salary and drives a public vehicle.

I can promise you new haven cops schedules do not allow for much needed rest and relaxation and reconnecting with loved ones.

Cant assume someone does or does not have a substance problem. You can say these two have a stupidity problem that could of cost lives. Uber and Lyft when you go out or a family member to pick you up

Fully staffed, that's a joke... between transfers and retirements the department lost over 50 cops last year and speaking of the contract and paid mental health benefits, yea that's not gonna happen.. last I heard they want to take more away from the cops medical. In two years there isn't going to be a NHPD if this keeps up. Hope everyone enjoys having a resident trooper and waiting even longer for call's to be answered.

The better question to ask about a DUI in police, is not do they think they are above the law, but do they think drinking will solve their problems, or only make them worse?
The culture of being tough and not asking for mental health care, and the stigma in police culture and fear it will impact your career, is very high.
By changing the culture, and making mental health care as easily and regularly accessed like a medical doctor or a dentist would reduce the stigma and make for a healthier department.

I dont disagree that they should face consequences for breaking the law and putting others as well as themselves in harms way by their poor choices.
Im just saying we are seeing higher rates of depression, anxiety and stress in first responders, and drinking can be a symptom of the deeper issue of mental health issues and that the lack of mental health care accessibility for first responders, and the stigma involved with asking for help and accessing care, is not a healthy situation.
So while they should be punished for their actions, we as a society should also be asking why did they do it, and what can we do to address the reasons behind their actions, and knowing that first responders jobs
involve a lot of stress and trauma, and that our department is understaffed and overworked, how can we improve their access to care and their staffing levels and work shifts to get officers in the best possible state of mind to handle their dangers and difficult jobs.
Both punishment for bad behavior and a closer look at what we can do to improve mental health in first responders is called for.

We need to destimatize mental health care for first responders.
We need to make mental health care access as simple as visiting your dentist for a cleaning every six months, and also anytime a problem arises, and like a yearly physical and visits with your medical doctor for anything that might need to be treated, or monitored regularly to keep you in good physical health. The brain is an organ, too.
Our first responders are in highly stressful, traumatic, depressing, anxiety creating jobs.
They need time off from work with their families and friends to destress and reconnect.
They need to work shifts without excessive overtime, or worrying that the time they take off from work isnt leaving the fellow officers short staffed, and at risk.
They need to work territories assignments that are not too large to cover in a reasonable amount of time during their shift.
They need to have a contract that includes mental health care with a private professional off site for privacy, and no stigma for accessing regular mental health care to keep in top mental health shape for the incredible dangerous and difficult job they do.
And if someone is self medicating, despite knowing it may cost them their job if they get caught, and they know full well the dangers of DUI, then we have to ask why they are self medicating? Treat the cause, DUI is a symptom of a deeper issue.
