Negrón: We want more input.

Meet the new bot: How ThoughtExchange can parse community responses.

School administrators have enlisted a new ally in reaching out to students, parents, and teachers: artificial intelligence.

Schools Superintendent Madeline Negrón unveiled her AI plans in a presentation to the Board of Education on Monday evening.

She said she’s gearing up to craft a new strategic plan” for New Haven Public Schools (NHPS) this spring. As part of that effort she plans to use a new software program with artificial intelligence capabilities to solicit and analyze feedback from school community members along the way.

That software is called ThoughtExchange. Negrón said it will enable her to send out open-ended questions to all kids and adults with access to NHPS’ PowerSchool communications system and analyze the results.

The recipients will be able to respond in the language of their choice, Negrón explained. School community members will be able to view one another’s anonymized responses, with AI-powered translations if necessary, and indicate their support for each other’s ideas. And then ThoughtExchange will analyze the responses using AI and other data tools.

Negrón said she plans to ask NHPS staff and families about what the school system is doing well, what could be improved, and what the most important skills are for kids to learn.

The advantage of ThoughtExchange, Negrón said, is that anybody can do it. You do not have to speak English to do it.”

I want people to feel like they have a voice in the process,” she added.

The ThoughtExchange responses and data will inform the team of administrators and other school community members, led by Assistant Superintendent of Curriculum Instruction Keshia Redd-Hannans and NHPS Chief of Staff Michael Finley, who will ultimately craft the new strategic plan.

Board of Ed Members Abie Benitez and Andrea Downer asked about how students and parents will be involved in the strategic plan drafting process.

Negrón replied that students and parents will be able to participate in the ThoughtExchange conversations, and that they will also have representation on Redd-Hannans and Finley’s team.

She said she aims to provide a draft strategic plan to the Board of Education in May.
