Tweed Will Fly To Wilmington, N.C.

Yet more noise and fumes. They must be using really old planes as the exhaust can easily be seen. Why can't all the planes land and take off towards the Sound. This airport should be closed down completely. I have to admit at first I was dumb enough to think Avelo was a good thing, but not now.

Looks like Avelo is going no where , they are here to stay no matter how many people complain. Lastly East Haven Mayor Carfora might say he stands with the people who are against the expansion but once more State money is funneled to that Town he will be singing a different tune !

There are lots of people in CT with family in these new Avelo flight locations. There are lots of snowbirds with homes in the southern states as well. There are lots of businesses that can use the Chicago and DC and other business destination sites. Having inexpensive flights to the Southern states and the Mid-Atlantic and the Midwest (hopefully they will add flights to additional locations in the Midwest besides Chicago,) means a lot more people can afford to visit family and friends and CT businesses can more easily get flights without having to waste time on the highway to travel to Bradley or NY/NJ or Boston airports.
I-95 and I-91 traffic create lots more air pollution than these airplanes, but we should pressure the federal government to work with the airline industry to have less pollution from airplanes. If the future of motor vehicles is electric power, what is the future for cleaner airplanes?

Not true, the planes are next-gen models and are also flown by American, Delta, United and Southwest.
The older 727's had exhaust that could be seen but not the later 737 models. I have watched many takeoff and they emit no smoke trails.
I think your hate for Tweed has biased your eyesight. Avelo is a great thing for thousands of air travelers who can use a nearby stress free airport. For a handful of flights some are equating that with mass pollution and yet no complaints about I-95 and I-91 which emit pollution 24/7/365.
Remember, Tweed preceded all who live near the airport. Now many know why homes near Tweed were cheaper, Location, Location and Location. Move next to a school, do you complain about the noise at recess, phys-ed classes, ball games played, school buses in and out of the school and cars in and out of the school?
If you do, you are not dealing with reality. Learn to live with Tweed as many have learned to live with two major highways producing pollution all day and all night along with very loud trucks.

Why do live near Tweed if it annoys you so much? people have had positive comments about Avelo and as time goes by, many are discovering there is a commercial airport besides Bradley field.
What's left for you to do, Tweed is not shutting down, more flights are being added, so now it's your move. Put up with the airport or move. Highway pollution is far worse that anything coming from Tweed takeoffs which by the way takeoffs last about 30 seconds, compare that with I-95 and I-91.

If Tweed closed down for good then what would be its replacement? What will go in its place that will benefit people even better than what's currently there now?

It's true that the land would probably have so much value, but what will anyone do with it if the airport was to disappear?? Tweed was put there to pretty much never leave.

People really need to stop having hatred and problems about what Tweed is doing. It basically been a done deal since day one. You always have the right to move away if you think it's the right choice for you, but otherwise, tough luck on your part.

I’m sympathetic to those who live next to the airport. But with the housing market in New Haven at all-time highs, why not list the home? You may be surprised at how much $$$ you’ll get.

Should the entire county be deprived of air travel? Should the entire city be deprived from New Haven progressing? If we want to be less reliant on Yale, we need to encourage more businesses and non-Yale employers to expand here. Tax-paying businesses. I hope Avelo succeeds.

Here is what I mean when I say false facts by those who hate Tweed. Tweed has had airline service back to the 50's, jet aircraft since the late 60's. Eastern, United, Delta, Allegheny, UsAir, American and other airlines that operated multiple flights to Tweed. It's not a sleepy little airport as you inaccurately stated. Tweed has a commercial certificate from the FAA allowing commercial flights. Move next a commercial airport and what do you expect? A few gliders soaring over the area, or a few Piper cubs used for pilot training and that it? Tweed preceded just about all those near the airport by decades and yet some never learn, airports make noise and Tweed is no different.
What about the tens of thousands who use the commercial flights, attend pilot training classes, repair private aircraft, organ transplants flown in for dying patients and all this is just supposed to go away so a few who have buyers remorse because of buying a home near an established airport can have their wants override the majority? Upstart airline, Southwest airlines started with 3 737's and have grown to be one of the largest airline in the country. All airlines start off small so what's your point? Your grasping at straws because your premise is not based on facts. Airlines have a legal right to serve Tweed and the area residents have voted for the new flights with their wallets. Tweed is poised to break passenger yearly numbers because the flights are doing well.
And where do get 20 large jets a day? More false facts. 737's are not large jets and at present Avelo offers between 3-7 daily flights. A drowning man will grasp the edge of a sword and your desperation is shown by your made up facts. Time to put up the "For Sale Sign" on the lawn. Stay or move, it's your choice.

I don't work at Tweed but I have used the airline flights for many years and for those who can't cope with Tweed's success, call a local realtor and see what the house will bring. If you like what is offered, go for it. Staying will only make your life miserable if Tweed bothers you that much. Many have posted on local media the noise does not bother them that much and like anything else, people get used to the noise which by the way is of a very short duration. Trying to push the fallacy that pollution from the relatively few planes at Tweed when compared to Bradley will cause widespread illnesses and some even paint it as a killing field. Tweed is not a constant source of pollution as are routes I-95 and I-91.

Tough Luck is what the mayor told us about the airport, Quinnchion. Is that how you feel about your neighbors? People of course can move but we also have the right not to be driven from our homes because some have a scheme to make money. What kind of AMerica is that? And please don't bring up Indian removal or slavery.... stick with the present story... People are indeed leaving while they can but that does not make this deal right. Just because you can do something does not mean you should do it. Just because I can leave does not mean I want to leave.

I’m not a fortune teller and I don’t have a crystal ball but like it or not Tweed will expand . I can see the City and or State buying up houses in the future on Dean St and the area of Roses Farm Rd in East Haven just like they did in the 60’s when they closed off Oar Ave in East Haven and for those that don’t know Dean St which use to run all the way down to Uriah St ( which connected to Oar Ave once you crossed the bridge at the creek ) crossing Douglas Ave and Johnson St . Houses were actually moved to other locations . Having lived in the Cove for most of my life I never minded the the Jet service including Air Wisconsin’s daily flights to Chicago , ( which Steve forgot to mention ) I moved due to high taxes but still have family there ( and actually would move back ) . The Cove is a great place to live but if you don’t like Tweed move because the planes are not going anywhere !

It’s clear that those blithely telling others to put their homes up for sale have been bought off themselves. There is negligible benefit to New Haven residents from Tweed. Goldman Sachs profit ledgers? Now that’s a different matter….

Wondering where you have been? United left after almost 5 years at Tweed due to runway constraints that led to weight restricted flights meaning not all seats could be filled. Eastern left for the same reason, ditto for Delta. Usair then American for years flew props that worked ok. When AA pulled the props, regional jets were used but early models were subjected to weight restrictions. The fastest growing airlines are the low cost carriers like Allegiant, Frontier, Spirit, etc. Avelo is such a carrier and they offer flights to leisure destinations such as Florida. They are doing very well as Florida is a big draw for state flyers. American, United, Delta are hub and spoke airlines, they require a connection to reach most cities.People like N/S flights and low fares. I see in the future United or Delta coming to Tweed now that a new generation of regional jets have been shown to work at Tweed. Still the runway needs to be lengthened to avoid weight restricted flights and diverted flights to other airport due to wet runways. Tweed's runway has been 5600 feet for decades and has not kept up with the times.
Avelo has 2 flights to Orlando on certain days so the demand is here.Adding non Florida cities is good for more options. 2022 will be a record year for Tweed passenger totals. As far as those who moved near Tweed, why did they do so? Lower home costs, plain & simple. The phrase they use is we were told Tweed would stay a small sleepy airport. No such official statement was ever made. It was used by real estate agents to move homes.
By the way, do remember our agreement that if Avelo was a failure, I would concede that you were right and if it was a success, you would concede I was right? It's been 6 months and Avelo is flying high, we both can't be right. Stay well.

STEVE, Avelo has stated a goal of 20 flights per day. No previous airline has reached and maintained that frequency with such large equipment so please stop exaggerating. The neighborhoods surrounding the airport as well as the far greater area of overflight neighborhoods have good reason to disagree with you.

Back to basics, page one, why buy a home near an existing airport and expect not to be living next to an airport? Can't have it both ways, a lower cost home compared to those higher priced homes a distance away and wanting the same tranquil, pastoral setting of those a distance away. Not possible.
There is a great benefit to area residents. 200 new jobs and tens of thousands of happy passengers using an existing nearby airport. No local government funding, something that irritated a few in the past. If you were looking for a home and a few doors down was long time home owner that had several dogs that at times were noisy. Others in the area did not feel it was a major problem. Would you buy the home and then complain or say I better look for another home? Tweed is a well known public facility that has been around for 90 years, it's type of operation has not changed, in fact some types of planes have gotten quieter. 727's are gone, next gen 737's are quieter. Still it's a commercial airport and airports make noise. Some are acting like those who bought homes in the last 5,10,15,20,30 years or so have the right to dictate land use beyond their property line. No one has bought me off, I use Tweed because it's nearby, not because I gain some financial benefit. If you think over 100 passengers per flight is a is negligible benefit, you are ignoring the greater number of people in favor of the few.
It's a real simple formula, can you live with the airport, if not, what are your options. Since Tweed is not going away, what's left. it's simple math and a real life decision to make.

Back in the 90's United had 7 daily flights, Continental had 3, Usair had about 6 or seven not counting several commuter airlines. Don't equate large aircraft as noisier, one of the smallest airline jets to fly out of Tweed was the BAC1-11, it rivaled the Concorde for noise. At present there are 3-7 daily flights and that will grow to 13-14 daily flights as shown on Avelo's timetable.
If local people are buying tickets, Avelo will add flights to meet the demand. It's how businesses are run. When I-95 was built some people got acclimated to the highway, truck noise. Some did not and moved. Same situation at Tweed. In the first three months at Tweed, 70,000 people used Avelo's flights. How many are bothered by Tweed, a very small percentage compared to the number of air travelers. Tweed is not going away, so it's time to make a decision. Stay or go.

We should continue to respect people on both sides of the issue. I sympathize with neighbors who have increased quality of life issues and other concerns since Avelo started. To be fair, part of this may be due that there had been a rather lengthy time period since there have been this many flights per day. During the late '80s and into the '90s there would be about 8 to 12 flights daily at times through United, Continental, and others when you could fly to Chicago, Pittsburgh, etc. I understand seeing that Avelo plans to increase to more than 12 daily flights is worrisome to neighbors. I trust that New Haven and East Haven will continue to work together with the airport to ensure there is consistent traffic enforcement, good planning, and that the Airport works to address concerns with noise, etc. However, the increase in air service for New Haven is very important for greater New Haven, and I support the increase in flights and plans for a new terminal, too. I support it since it is within the current boundaries of airport property. In the short term, I hope that the airport has plans for shuttle buses to New Haven, and to contract for Uber service, to help with the parking crunch that will happen once the new flights start next month.

We are talking about powerful jets that can take off or land in any direction regardless of wind speeds or direction. Just go down to Kennedy and watch the planes there for a few hours. Taking off or landing with favorable winds saves a few gallons of fuel, and Avelo are just a cheap airline with no consideration for their unfortunate neighbors . Pretty well all flights can land or take off over the Sound, and this must, and I repeat absolutely must, be a condition of any further increases in services, or expansion of the runway.

It's a safety issue to do so, why do think wind direction dictates what runway to use? It's this type of faulty reasoning that makes some think aircraft can use any runway they want to regardless of weather conditions.

At least, read these 2 articles, they are short, won't take much time, but they will give you info you need to fully understand what pilots need to do when landing and taking off. What is left out of this equation is the number of daily private and charter flights. What about the property rights of Tweed, how about the right for area travelers to use an existing airport, not one many miles away. Avelo will continue to be popular with metro area people and if another city is found to be popular, Avelo will add that city to it's list. It's what airlines and airports do, Tweed is no different.

Those links both mention the reasons for landing and taking off into the wind, it brings an aircraft to a stop sooner landing into the wind, it takes less runway during takeoff going into the wind. You are commenting on a subject you know nothing about. Any pilot reading your posts would be shaking his head. Wind speed and direction dictate what runway will be used. Get an aircraft band radio and listen to the control tower giving instructions, wind direction and speed are always a factor in selecting a runway to use. I gave you 2 articles showing wind direction and speed matter, show me an article stating wind speed and direction have no bearing on what runway to use. Air traffic controllers always use what these 2 article
mention. In all my years I never, never heard anyone associated with flying give such bad advice as you did.
