Bad Air Comes Back

The smoke from Canadian wildfires has plunged New Haven’s air quality to dangerous levels again, prompting the mayor to warn ​“sensitive groups” like older adults, pregnant women, children, and those with asthma to take extra caution.

Mayor Justin Elicker sent out an email alert about those smoggy air hazards at 12:37 p.m. Friday. The culprit for this unhealthily smoky haze — as was the case when a similar pall descended upon New Haven and much of the East Coast earlier this month — is persistent wildfires in Canada.

Elicker urged those in vulnerable groups to cut short outdoor exercise and wear a N‑95 mask while outside.

Mayor Elicker Air Quality Message

Hi, this is Mayor Justin Elicker with a message for New Haven residents about the poor air quality that is in our region today. Por favor espere para escuchar este mensaje en español.

Due to smoke traveling our way from wildfires in Canada, the air quality in New Haven today is currently considered to be ​“Unhealthy for Sensitive Groups” (an ​“Orange” alert) and it is forecasted to worsen later today to ​“Unhealthy” for all groups (a ​“Red” alert).

Sensitive groups include individuals with asthma, heart or lung disease, other respiratory alignments as well as older adults, pregnant women, children and teenagers.

Sensitive groups should take the following steps immediately to reduce exposure and all individuals should follow these guidelines should the air quality worsen, as forecasted, later today.

Shorten the amount of time you are active outdoors.

· Choose less strenuous outdoor activities (like walking instead of running) so you don’t breathe as hard.

· Reschedule your active physical activities to be indoors.

· Wear a N‑95 mask while you are outside as well.
