A student brought a bb gun to Bishop Woods Architecture and Design Magnet School Thursday morning.
Police were notified and investigated, and they discovered the weapon was unloaded, schools spokesperson Justin Harmon reported in a release Thursday afternoon.
He called the incident “a serious breach of school rules, which bar weapons of any kind on school premises.”
Bishop Woods is a pre-K‑8 school.
“We would like to commend the brave students and staff that made us aware of this situation,” Harmon wrote. “All students and staff are safe.”
What did the schools do about the incident? Was the student suspended?
The schools won’t say.
“The district’s policy is not to disclose personal information about students in cases like these,” Harmon told the Independent.
Hamden’s public schools did disclose information earlier this week about steps taken in response to a student bringing a gun to school.
Thank you to the brave staff and students who came forward and notified the authorities to prevent a potential tragedy from occurring. You may have saved lives today.
The city needs to employ counselors to go into the schools to help the children process this and other incidents, and to proactively increase social emotional workshops to help students learn how to handle conflicts and mental health issues. This would be much better than creating a new sub department and wasting money on the four administrative positions with temporary pandemic relief money.
