Boy, 15, Dies After Crash

Zayne Thomas was headed to Morris Cove’s Pardee Seawall on his bicycle hoping to see the sun set when a crash ended his life.

The crash occurred Sunday night at 8:21, according to police spokesperson Officer Scott Shumway.

He said Zayne was riding his bicycle southbound on the north-side sidewalk of Townsend and then sought to cross the road. A driver of a Honda Civic crashed into him.

Zayne was taken to the hospital, where he died days later.

He was 15 years old. On Thursday, he was buried.

His community in Morris Cove and at Hamden Hall are mourning. A community celebration of his life is planned for Tuesday at Anthony’s Ocean View.

He was the model son,” Zayne’s mother, Laila Ali Thomas told the Independent Thursday.

He died having the best summer day, riding to the beach with his two best friends, and he died trying to get to the seawall for the sunset.”

The driver, who was uninjured, stayed on scene,” Shumway said. He said no charges have been filed against the driver. The case is under investigation.

Thomas was a freshman at Hamden Hall Country Day School. He was a gifted student” who played on the junior varsity baseball team, according to a release issued by the school.

Zayne was a bright young man and everything we could have hoped for in a student. There are five core values that are inherent in what we call the Hamden Hall experience: excellence, support, participation, accountability and respect. Zayne embodied all five of these core values, and our school community is deeply grieving his loss,” Head of School Bob Izzo said at an Upper School assembly called in response to Zayne’s death. Student speakers at the assembly noted Zayne’s willingness to help others, his affable personality and the smile that was always on his face, and the fact that he was kind, compassionate and thoughtful,” according to the school’s release.

Zayne was the son of Damien and Laila Thomas, who live in Morris Cove; and the grandson of the imam of Dar ul Ehsaan in Bristol. His funeral was planned for Thursday at the Islamic Center of Connecticut in Windsor.
