The individuals who need this benefit the least will be the ones who will benefit the most. Of course, at least two questions need to be asked:

Another reason not to vote for DeLauro. Shilling and pandering to buy votes from voters shifts this burden to the taxpayers. And all of us who worked and work to pay ALL OUR DEBTS feel like chumps. Why pay? Why work? The Socialist Worker Paradise will pick up the tab--- till they run out of other people;s money (as Margaret Thatcher said)

It's important to remember the President CANNOT spend money Congress has not appropriated. there were loan funds, not a Congressional appropriation. therefore, the President's action was unconstitutional.

In another thread, Ethan castigated me for saying that a household with an income of $150,000 (e.g., two teachers with ten years experience) was middle-class rather than elite. Now, Biden says households earning $250,000 or less are "working or middle-class", and in need of a hand-out. In additional to the unfairness, this action, like the rent moratoria and loan payment pauses are wildly inflationary. Money not spent on loan repayment will drive up prices for cars, housing, and other goods as too many dollars chase too few goods.

The fundamental problem is the educational-industrial complex, in which educational institutions profit by falsely saying that education is always a good investment. Schools, not the taxpayers, should be on the hook when students default. Such a policy would force schools to push students toward programs that truly enhanced their earning potential, and to be more selective in those whom they admit.

How's Urn Pendragon doing with that PoliSci degree from Southern? Was the a good investment for her, to the taxpayer? Last I knew, it wasn't. For those, like Urn, who have been duped by schools like Southern, we need to look at bankruptcy relief.

Many of the jobs that exist require skills not taught during a standard 4 year liberal arts college degree. Yet a bachelors degree is a requirement to even apply for many jobs. Many of those same jobs did not require a college degree prior to WWII, and instead people were trained on the job or apprenticed and worked their way up to positions with more responsibility and a higher level of skills.
We should overhaul our higher education system to create two higher education pathways to a career. One which is job skills training oriented, and life skills for trades and skillset specific jobs, with paid employer apprenticeships and on the job training, and the other which is the traditional academic track for jobs that will require liberal arts backgrounds.
Many of the employers in job fields that are in need of skilled employees need to have employees trained in that field’s skills and job ready, and do not need a traditional 4 year college graduate with no skills in that field of employment. We could eliminate many students college debt by not making everyone get a traditional college degree in order to apply for jobs that will not utilize what the graduate learned in college.

This is a silly move to buy votes. I'm all for helping others out who are struggling with debt, however if Biden, Rosa, and everyone else really cared they would go after the root cause. It's great that current folks can get $10-20k of relief, but grad from the class of 2022 can sign up for $50k worth of loans and go to a predatory online "university" with low graduation rates and get into the same mess the folks getting bailed out are currently in.

This is a political bandaid rather than a solution.

Regarding crazy Leora Levy's statement about socialism, she should be aware that any democracy that charges taxes (all of them) to provide public services is slightly socialistic. I'm not that excited about the expensive building of a wildly higher percentage of roads (miles per resident) in rural red states that are hostile to science and reason, but we do it anyway because we're the United States.

I'm sure the student loan forgiveness will be meaningful for a lot of people but it addresses a symptom, not the disease. Since higher educational costs have been baked into the system by decades of lavish campus expansions, the only cure I see is to starve the system (by systemically encouraging more high school students into trades instead of college) and hopefully weed out weaker institutions. The process has already begun and accelerated in the past decade (see below). Hint to the children... I'm a professional. My plumber has a second vacation house in Maine. I don't.
