Democratic Primary Mayoral Debate Slated For Sept. 5

Mayor Justin Elicker and former legal aid attorney Liam Brennan will take the stage for a Democracy Fund-hosted debate on Tuesday, one week before the city’s Democratic primary election.

That debate will take place on Sept. 5 at 7 p.m. (doors at 6:30) at Career Regional High School at 140 Legion Ave.

It’s being hosted by the city’s public financing program, which both Elicker and Brennan are participating in and which provides candidates with public grants and matching dollars if they forswear committee contributions and limit individual contributions to no more than $445 apiece.

Elicker and Brennan are the only two mayoral candidate who will appear on the debate stage because the other two mayoral hopefuls who had sought to participate in the Democratic primary on Sept. 12, Shafiq Abdussabur and Tom Goldenberg, did not successfully petition their ways onto the ballot.

Goldenberg, who is not participating in the Democracy Fund, has secured ballot access for the general election in November on the Republican and Independent Party lines. Abdussabur, who is participating in the Democracy Fund, has secured ballot access in November after successfully petitioning as an unaffiliated candidate.
